So, my new years resolution is to break 100, consistently.

Last two rounds have been bang on 100!!!

Chipping and pitching has let me down.... any advice?!

Yeah.......lessons and practice.......well known cure for high handicapitis*

*and low handicapitis!!

chipping and pitching.....commit to the shot, don't decelerate, don't always grab a lofted wedge....you can "putt" with a 7/8 iron and get great results.

From how far is using a 7 iron 'putt' efficient? I tried it a few times from close in, and it worked well!

Also, I am currently taking lessons atm, so will be working hard tomorrow evening!!!

There are no rules to these types of shot, it's all down to what lies between you and the hole and your own imagination. Anyone who plays on a links course will try low running shots from all over the place whereas someone who plays parkland courses is more likely to reach for a lofted club. Just practice each method and see which gives you the best results.

^ this.

For me personally I will only reach for a lofted club if I've got a lot of junk to go over or a bunker I need to clear. My go to club is an 8 iron around the green, it gives me some loft but also great ability to run out the ball.....its saved my bacon on many many many occasions and left me with a tap in.

I do kind of have a rule for chipping around the green - especially a chip and run shot:

Decide the optimum place to land the ball - all things being equal approx 3' on the putting surface.
How much run out to the hole will there be from said landing spot.
Select relevant club - anything from SW to 7i usually.

If you're short sided and rough/bunker/bank etc to get up and over then that's a different shot and usually SW or GW but again with the ideal landing spot being a big factor in my choice and visualisation of the shot.

Perhaps a lesson to get a decent chipping action then practice and more practice around the greens. Take heart though that you've hit 100 without a decent short game so imagine how much lower you'll go when you make a few up and downs

And don't forget the other quick win areas i.e while a couple of duffed chips might stand out in your mind after a round & make you think you could've had a 98 if only... its a fair bet that two less putts would have the same effect

Agreed, overall my putting is quite decent for my level, I two-putt probably 14/15/16 out of 18 holes on aeverage - so yes, your point is still valid! :)

Also, agree with Homer. I take massive heart that I have had 5 lessons, and can easily see where I could get to low / mid 90s and quickly!! It is spurring me on hugely!

Shame I have a skiing holiday that is going to get in the way of things!

That shouldn't stop you!
