Absolute nuisance the whole lot of them - and not just the amateur ones either

Why don't they just ban fans from taking phones & cameras into the course altogether like at most golf events around Europe?

I think it comes down to education. Most of the professional snappers on the European Tour are aware of the rules and 90% of the time are pretty good at not interfering. The same for the US but its these co-sanctioned events where the locals are very enthusiastic but don't have the discipline or the knowledge of where and when to stand and shoot

Your point is well made.

However the cynic in me says that most of the cameras/phones in question would have been manufactured by companies in that neck of the woods.

Whilst I accept that cameras/phones are generally a pain in the arse where golf spectators are concerned wouldn't the Far East contingent consider implementing a total ban on such items at this event ever so slightly counter productive?

UP1.

the reason for banning cameras at European events has little to do with any concern for the players. The primary reason, as you'll discover if you read the small print if you get a ticket for an event, is to protect the PGA's copyright.

with cameras where you can switch off any noise, unless you stick it in the golfers face how are you going to disturb his concentration?
