Hi all

are there any forumers who are regular snapchatters?

as we are looking at the possibility of setting up an account and letting a snapchat user who is a plays a lot and loves their gear run it

if it worked out there would be some cool opportunities for the right person

drop me a mail if you are interested

thanks

Mike

I'm on snapchat, and keen to use it a lot more, but don't have anything interesting to snap about. Golf on the other hand I could snapchat about all day, be it from the course, the range or at home!!

Not wanting to question your social media strategy, but I can't see the sense in this.

Why a snapchat account? Video messages that expire after 1-10 seconds is surely not the right medium for GM? I may be completely off the mark here, so apologies if that's the case. It just doesn't seem like a good idea!

What about Instagram instead? Surely a much better platform?

They already use that platform regularly-ish

There are lots of the instant message platforms now

Snapchat is catching up with Instagram and Twitter

And certainly something that will catch the interest of people - will look forward to seeing what's produced

Ok, just joined Snapchat - see what all the fuss is about! Looking forward to seeing what content comes out of the GM HQ.

I hadn't come across it before so I just watched a couple of YouTube videos on how to use it and then downloaded it, but it comes across as more of a direct messaging platform rather than an Instagram/Twitter platform that anyone can come across any content, join/follow and comment on, and like you say, with the photo messages only being live for 10 seconds, I'm struggling to understand who the GM audience would be?!

Yeah, seems odd. Wanted to download it and have a try of it to see if my views on it were going to change!?!? So far, I do stand by my earlier post of it not being the right place in my opinion. Initial thoughts are that there are a large number of big companies already in it, so am interested to see what content they produce etc. Must be something in it!

It's a completely different platform for media, unlike anything else. You wont see the same posts as get copied across FB, Twitter, Insta etc and offers an entirely different entertainment experience. I for one really commend GM for looking at producing some content for it.

It isn't just direct messaging - you can share the content to anyone who follows you through the 'Stories' feature which can be rewatched for 24 hours. The PGA Tour really lead the way in their Snapchat channel for golf - attending tournaments and having 1 question interviews with pros right after their round, challenges to fans, videos of approach shots from the angle of a green side fan, putts etc - it is instant media, meant to be digested, enjoyed and forgotten about. A couple of pros are great on there - Rickie Fowler being the best - Q&As, behind the scenes etc. Danny Lee is hilarious on there. Then there are pro coaches such as Rick Shiels, Mark Crossfield, MAMG all with some pretty cool content.

With all due respect, those questioning the viability of this probably aren't the people a Snapchat channel would be targeted toward and used by. I believe that 70% of users are under 30, and there are about 100 million active daily users. Facebook are so worried by this new form of media consumption that they offered $3bn last year to acquire SC, more than 3x what they paid for WhatsApp!

If GM are looking at ways to attract a younger generation to their content, brand, website etc, then Snapchat is a fantastic idea, provided they then get the content right! There is definitely a gap on Snapchat for a UK focused broadly aimed golf channel IMO.

OK, I learn't more reading that than on the 2 YouTube video's about it, as I stated, it came across as direct messaging only to known contacts and messaging them etc, nothing further, I'll look into it more, I've only just downloaded it so I haven't had time to investigate it further, but I do a lot of social media for businesses I look after and I'm soon to be involved more in the marketing at my club, and even though I'm the wrong side of the targeted age group, if it's something that gets out in front of a different captive audience than some of the other platforms, I'll be all over it like a rash, even at my age :smirk:

Fish, it honestly sounds like your club would be in very good hands with you helping on the marketing side - someone with the mindset to look at new things, combined with your passion can only be a winner. However, to save you some time, Snapchat wouldnt be an avenue I'd use for individual club marketing - the perishable nature of the content, and the methods of following means it would be nigh on impossible to use this channel to attract new members.

To put some additional context, Snapchat stories is great at covering 'events'. Whether that be a footie match you attend, a mates wedding etc, it provides a great view through the eye of an attendee. I'm not sure why it works so well, but believe me it does!

For GM, something like the recent Driver Test Day would have been perfect for Snapchat. 10 second clips of various drives, building into a 'story', covering the long drive contest etc would have been great, IMO far better than the 'Live' FB coverage (which I commend them for at least trying) which struggled with tech and was on at the wrong time for people to really interact with golfers. A 24 hour story, combined with a summary on Facebook and linking out to coverage on the website would have been fantastic - covering the 'event' in a variety of channels and broadening their demographic outreach.

Or the H4H day - covering the nearest the pin challenge hole - leave the connected phone on the hole where its being played, each person gets filmed, adds extra pressure, and when you're waiting on a far flung corner of the course for the group ahead to clear the green you could very quickly check the other groups 'banter' and shots - already giving ammo for the clubhouse!

Definitely keep looking into it, I would recommend following pgatoursnaps and seeing what they do on the weekend for great event coverage.

If the golfing media want to keep up with how the youngest generation expect to consume content and how to appeal to them, just copy whatever Rickie Fowler does - the guy is almost as good as this as he is at golf!

Fair point. As I say, before today I wasn't even a user. So much more than a DM service then - as mentioned I am looking forward to the content now.

Cheers for the explanation, too. Very informative.

If I had more to snap about, then I would use it more! I try to avoid selfies, as, sadly, I have a great face for radio!
Maybe I should make more of an effort with it and start snapping more!
