Played in the midweek medal this morning in a 3 ball, took 4 hrs 30 mins! An absolute disgrace. Older members playing in front of us, oblivious or ignorant to the fact that we were waiting for every single shot. It had taken us 1 hr 54 to play 8 holes! The worst case being on the 7th tee, we waited 11 minutes.....that's how long it should take to play a hole at 300ish yards with no long grass!

I was -2 standing on the 7th tee, waited, waited and waited some more. Top, duff, half shank and a bogey. Completely ruined my day waiting on members who's etiquette was nothing short of a disgrace.

If it had been junior members holding them up, names would have been taken and letters written. I know they've paid their money and they deserve to play, and I have played with and against a number of older members this season and have enjoyed it. The issue isn't with age, but with etiquette and manners!

Rant over. Sorry.

Ask to get through? It shouldn't be the case. New junior members at Hamilton GC (Riccarton) have to sit an exam about rules and etiquette before they're allowed on the big course!! Letter has been written, but nothing will be done about it!

You should ask. If they say no then write a letter by all means. But you've not even had dialogue with them.

Then why mention "older members" if your issue isn't with age?

I know its very frustrating Im sure we have all gone through the exact same thing I know i have, Even though I shouldn't have to ask them if I (we) can play through you should try asking them as early on as possible, It could have saved you some time.

Also did you recognize any of the players?

Had the group in question lost ground on the group in front of them?
If they were waiting themselves , then the course is rammed and no amount of letting through will sort the issue.

But if they had lost a hole or more then slow torture is the only solution .

I think the reference to age was to illustrate that these were experienced players not total newbies and therefore should know better

Exactly!

Sat took 5h 08m for 18 holes....I was -

1. The highest handicap in the field to that point.
2. The oldest person in the field to that point.
3. Probably the player least able to walk quickly to that point
3. Close to suicidal and with no will to ever play the game again...

'It's the club championship what do you expect' doesn't cut it with me; sorry.

My point about age was to illustrate that they weren't newbies to the game, nor were they new members. I get that due to age it'll take a little longer for folk to get round.

They lost at least a hole on the game in front and one of the guys in the group was well aware that he was holding us up as he looked back to check often enough.

Experienced golfers should know simple things like; putting your bag on the side of the green where you're about to walk to the next tee, to mark your card when it's appropriate to do so(i.e. Not directly I front of the green you've just putted out on!) and that when you're looking for a ball in the long grass, to call the group behind through.

I enjoy golf, and I take my time to play, but when it's my turn; I'm ready to go. I'm not still fumbling around looking for my club, or a tee or my bloody ball!

There's old and not so old members at our club who just refuse to let faster games through .

Some really do know better [ past captains, council members included ] but they just won't let some through, unless asked firmly. I normally say in jest " i suppose you'll wave us through at the computer terminal. lol.
We've also had an influx of new members recently who have never received any instructions on how to behave and just don't know any better.
I could have a good guess at who the culprits were if you're still at Bellshill.

No it doesn't. ... fastest player round our course is over 80 and still carries his bag.

However it's get to see that someone else has brought ex Captains and committee members into the firing line so it's probably best I quit now 'cos I'm clearly on a looser!

I'm a senior golfer too but the group in question are notoriously slow and have been members for donkeys years. I mostly try to get out before them, so take note GMAC88 mid week they always play around the same time.

Next time it happens you should video their antics so they cannot dispute what went on. A committee would find it hard to do nothing when presented with hard evidence.

Fair play to the old fella! Hope I'm still in good enough Nick to get round at that age! But invariably, older guys will take longer to get round, it makes sense. They can do a lot to speed themselves up, like numerous other members do! Cheers William, I'll keep that in mind!

There's unfortunately nothing that can be done about the matter. Slow play is a problem that will never go away...

The worst I must add is getting stuck behind a four ball. Pretty much, 'the' worst experience ever as a golfer. Incredibly frustrating!

Group in front of us were stuck behind a 3 ball the other day. The 3 ball turned into a single player after about 15 holes but the knobhead/guy just started to hit 3 balls instead of one, all while the group behind him on the tee box waited patiently for him to "do his thing".
From what I've seen it's either newbs who don't know the crack or better players/low handicappers who really should know better but for some reason think the golf course belongs to them!

I think you've three courses of action

  1. Become instrumental in fixing the slow play issue at your club
  2. Get rid of the older members
  3. Fix the flaw in your game that causes a blow-up hole/s when you face a delay

edit: obviously No2 isn't a serious consideration ;)
