After watching a bit of the Irish open today, one of the on course commentators must have had a laser with slope reading and was giving the distance and elevation changes to the green.

We only have two holes that I know the elevation change on, 5th and 13th. The 5th is only 8 yards, but 13 is almost 20 and is a real advantage to know, as you get plenty of guys looking at there GPS saying 175 to the middle then leaving the ball miles short

Obviously you can’t use a Laser with this in comps, but would knowing this info be useful to you around your own course?

Would be nice to know the specifics but obviously over time you get to know the difference through repeated trial and error

When I bought my laser I wouldve bought the Leopold that has the slope but has a yellow cap that you can put on it to turn the slope function off but the R&A refuse to see this as a conforming model (despite the game being about trust and honesty so often they seem to think we cant be trusted as to which mode to use a laser in, even though it is highly visibly different!). Would be nice to use a slope model once round the home course for sure

Anyone else think this thread was going to be about Slope rating i.e. a term trademarked by the United States Golf Association as a measurement of the difficulty of a golf course for bogey golfers relative to the course rating?

Around your home club trial and error should eventually give you the knowledge, but if playing a practice round for an upcoming comp' at an unfamiliar course it would be useful to use one.

Or Jeremy Clarkson.

hugely helpful - which is why the caddies all use slope devices when compiling their sheets nowadays!

for most of us it's a matter of converting the yardage based on experience; fine for home courses played many times but tricky when visiting others.

We have a lot of holes (8. Holes) that are either above or below the fairway considerably. It's a hassle to guess the additional clubage. One of the main reasons I'm looking at different courses next year.
I am tempted to buy a slope disto to help in practice rounds, but that wouldn't help in comps.

just log the height differentials once on a spare card and you can carry it in the comps

record it any way you like from additional/less club to effective yardage differentials

there really shouldn't be any need to guess the impact on clubbing

Actually it's already been done by the guys who compile the 'Pro Books'

The allowance for slope on The West Course 14th, for example, is 9 yards.

strange as it may seem there's an increasing requirement to cover off some of the more dramatic differentials nowadays - sticking to Wentworth that might be back tier of 7 from the middle of the 11th fairway! Yardage and elevation!

I think having a slope Laser for a round so you could back to back compare against the v3 would be awesome , ie

3rd is 155, plays 135 etc etc,

True enough! Though I'm not sure what a player would think a caddie was doing (apart from 'my job boss') if he went out there and measured that in the middle of a practice round! Would need some delicate explanation imo! And the ability to virtually see through trees. But certainly the elevation differential between front tier and back one, even from 'position A'.

Great but only as good as the golfer using it. If your still hitting all over the place and inconsistent lengths. It would be if little use. Learn to be consistent first and don't waste your money.
