Slope system

The whispers have been quite loud for quite some time. This is from the EnglandGolf website:

"England Golf will be moving to the USGA course rating system effective 1st January 2014. Information on all Course Rating related web pages will be updated shortly."

Teams for re-assessment are being set up at County Union level.

County officials have already being trained and I imagine we are adopting it from next year.

Is this being adopted to change the handicapping system or to allow for easier transition of people coming to play in the UK on breaks etc

Dont think it is the system we are going to adopt but more for the tourist industry I think.

Congu and many other handicapping authorities have been in discussion about the Worldwide Handicapping System for some time.

"There are 6 main systems in use at present. The goal is to work towards a core system with local variations worldwide. Everyone gave a presentation on their system, and what they felt was important locally. A new system will be based on USGA system, but not lock stock and barrel. However, if based on the USGA system the likelihood of some element of Slope being incorporated is very likely. The USGA is aware of some of the inaccuracies generated by Slope in its current form and is prepared to address them."

Don't know why they can't have one system throughout the world rather than having localised ratings.

In a perfect world, that would be ideal - but each system has its own enthusiasts and often they cannie see other peoples views and thoughts - I'm as bad as all of them I'afraid! - Having worked with both US an EGU systems, the former to me is much fairer and superior

totally agree - I would currently be off 19 on the US system :)

I like the idea of a slope system as I don't think SSS goes far enough in determining the relative difficulty of a course. As for the h'cap system, I have severe reservations about it (based on what I have read). The USGA website says...

Acceptable Scores

Q. What scores are acceptable for handicap posting purposes?

A. Almost all scores are acceptable because of the basic premise of the USGA Handicap Systemâ„¢ which states that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. Therefore, all of the following are acceptable scores:

When at least seven holes are played (7-12 holes are posted as a 9-hole score; 13 or more are posted as an 18-hole score)
Scores on all courses with a valid Course Rating™ and Slope Rating®
Scores in all forms of competition: match play, stroke play, and team competitions where each player play their own ball
Scores made under The Rules Of Golf
Scores played under the local rule of “preferred lies”
Scores made in an area observing an active season
Please visit Section 5-1 of the USGA Handicap System manual for further reference.

The first paragraph is great in an ideal world but IMHO this leaves the handicap system open to abuse. Granted, there are those that abuse the CONGU system, which isn't perfect by any stretch. My other reservations are...

1) You only have to play 13 holes and then you can can just record Nett Pars for the remaing 5 holes? Really? How on earth is that a good idea?

2) You record scores from matchplay, and if you conceded a hole you take the shots already taken on a hole and add "the players best judgement" of how many more he would need to finish?

3) Bounce games with gimme's count as do team competitions where both players may not finish the hole.

Now, I have no experience of this system so could be convinced why it is better than ours but at least with CONGU you actually have to hit all of the shots.

Aren't players in the States required to submit cards for all rounds they play? If so it would take a great change of mindset to get it of the ground over here.
Match Play, Team games, Preferred lies, and putting down a score to suit the players judgement on what he should get ( know one or two try to do that now!), White tees,Yellow tees.
Who's going to collate all this information as not all Clubs have a computer system to allow individuals to put in their own cards

Understand Hawkeye's concerns but from my perspective of getting your handicap down it's a great system as every round can count rather than waiting. I certainly used it for that purpose within the ethos of "spirit of the game" that it was only very close gimmies in bounce games, and never once used less than a full 18 holes.
Painterboy, white and yellow tees will have their own ratings.

Who's going to collate it? No-one, because...

"the basic premise of the USGA Handicap Systemâ„¢ which states that every player will try to make the best score at each hole in every round, regardless of where the round is played, and that the player will post every acceptable round for peer review. "

Of course they will

Does this mean our current handicaps will all be reassessed to start with and all cards will count or will the slope only be used over here for competitive rounds.

England Golf says that they are moving to the USGA course rating system. They are not saying that they are moving to the USGA handicapping system.
