Just reading Delc getting his ear bent on his "shot a 10 today" blog, and he mentions about the course being slope rated.
talks about surveyors with rulers, protractors and all sorts of measuring equipment. But surprisingly no golfers inputs.

Any chance that Golf monthly will be doing a piece on this in the near future to explain what's what and what goes into ones course being rated, in which order are they being done etc etc.

Anyone on here anything to add on the process.

Nothing to add except to say that I'd like to see it all explained too. I'd loved to have seen what the slope difference between my club and the Marquis at Woburn in the recent forum meet - 10 shots?

The "slope" rating as such I understand isn't coming here as yet ( and might never ). The re assessment of courses being done is to re measure for SSS on all tees and for both Male and Females.

Good idea. Like you I'm none the wiser and even if it never actually arrives still interesting to find out about

Ex captain and County President at my club is in charge of an assessment team and all of his volunteers are golfers so input is there but not in a playing capacity.

I'll ask him if they are also giving the courses a slope rating at the same time next time I see him as fairly sure he said they are.

Will certainly be interesting to know if they are

The guys doing the courses for the PGA East Area not including Norfolk are only at the moment doing SSS ratings for each tee as a number of courses have requested ratings for each tee for both sexes.

I'm not 100% but I think that all the Scotland courses have already been slope rated. Sure that some of the Scottish contingent can confirm.

Just been having a read of Phil's link. Does seem very complicated, granted I've only glanced through.

You could possibly be right in regards the Scotland courses - I have a feeling it's because of the influx of US golfers visiting to help them with their HC ?

Our Golf union were looking for volunteers, there is a 3 day training course (being run by i assume its the R and A but i guess it could just as easily be CONGU). I had initially volunteered but had to pull out when the course dates were set as they didn't tie in with work, I was very disappointed as I would have loved to have been part of the process.

As far as I know once trained the volunteers would have gone around and assessed the course's.

They said they were re-assessing the SSS's and doing the Slope rating. They had clip boards and a measuring wheel, but nothing else that I could see.

Re: Scotland's course ratings and how they differ to England.

My understanding is that the SGU use the USGA rating system for calculating SSS and that clubs can optionally apply for a slope rating in addition to that. Quite a lot of courses have been rated for slope as a result but it's not true for all.

Edit: I am not an expert, it just happens to be something I had to look up a while back to settle a dispute. :)

I made the bit up about protractors and rulers, just added a bit of edge to the story. 😁. Bet they had rubbers as well.
