I know the new system is due to come in when all the courses are assessed. I also get that the slope will modify your playing handicap depending on the rating of the course / tees played.

What I don't get is how handicaps will be assessed after a qualifying competition. I am assuming SSS and thus CSS will be obsolete so how will handicap adjustments be calculated?

When playing under the system in NZ 3 years ago there was no CSS calculated and not aware of this changing . fairly sure there was no SSS as the slope rating took care of that.

I think there is a table to give you what shots extra or less same as the CSS in effect from what i understand.

We have had slope for some time as we get loads of Americans playing.

Yes there will be adjustments and will be very similar to what we currently have with CSS. The adjustment procedure is called CBA with the main difference that after +2 it becomes RO

Handicap adjustments aren't made - your score is related to par (your handicap index has already been adjusted to a course/tee one as you reference) and the resultant differential goes into your rolling average at the end of the month (or not depending on what it was and what your existing scores are) to deliver your new handicap index.

Whether the new system mirrors the USGA one or the AUS on, or NZ or European, or whether doesn't, will only come out in time. The revised course ratings are simply a better reflection of courses difficulty to a wider range of playing capabilities - what happens next remains unknown (you could easily use them within a system that fundamentally retains CONGU existing system).

That's good to know as felt that was one of the down sides in NZ .

There are interesting theoretical arguments around it - if the course is that hard your score will probably never influence your handicap index at all; any rolling average of the best X from Y will mean that your worst scores are irrelevant.

Obviously the corollary is those times the course plays really really easy; here it obviously does have an impact, but if you increase X the impact is small.

Finally, and importantly for all but the elite golfers, most rounds within the system will not be played in stroke play competition so why differentiate those that are? The whole principle of the rolling average all rounds approach is that such factors are diluted out!

Indeed , once I'd got my head round the new to me system I didn't beat myself up so much when I had a bad round down to the weather .
Was interesting to note how the pressure ramped up when you knew you were about to lose a good round out of your best 10 ;)

Once slope is in it is almost certain the system will be the same as the EGA (European Golf Association) system. ie CONGU with slope.
Your exact handicap is adjusted according to the Course Rating (similar to SSS) and the slope for that set of tees at that course to produce your playing handicap.
Post play the equivalent of a CSS is calculated and exact handicaps adjusted accordingly.

Whether or not all systems will adopt the USGA concept of 'all scores to count' (ie matchplay, 4BBB, social) is still being debated but the original messages were that the system would allow for 'Comps only' or 'astc' depending on the national authority's wishes.

Does anyone know what the likely proposed timeline for changes is now (course assessment being a key factor) ?

I ask as read previously it had a long way to go.
