So for some unbeknownst reason I had a go with a SLDR last night and couldn't get it off the ground.

The guy had asked my handicap and we'd had a good (geeky) discussion about clubs and launch angles etc. He taped one up for me to have a hit with and came out to see how I was getting on a little later.

Now, I was swinging AWFULLY, last night, even with my own clubs but literally couldn't get one to go higher than 15 yards off the ground. Most had a low hooky shape (was the stiff shaft but the guy said it looked too whippy with how I was swinging) but even trying to hit a high choppy cutty one couldn't get it airborne!

Maybe I need to 'loft up'? - or, more realistically, stick with the decent gear I've already got and stop messing about.

might just be your swing on the night Jim.

Stick with what you have as last year was pretty decent for you. Typical golfer, always tempted by something new :D

I am sure the guy helping you has seen it all and I am sure he could see your class despite your poor form on the night.

If your going to have a go on Fisher Price... I mean Taylor Made clubs, your going to get burned... :D

I did get a sneak peak of the near Nike Covert 2.0 though which they're putting out on the floor on Saturday which looked very nice!

Might have a bash with that next week ...

I came very close to buying the original Covert Tour last year. Trying to stop changing clubs but am tempted to have a hit with the 2.0 version of it. If I win the lottery I might have a crack with the BB Alpha........

could well be the shaft. me and my nephew both couldn't launch an anser. the shaft felt like spaghetti. my nephew bombs it and neither could hit this thing at all.

it was laughable!

Well me an my mate are going to the range tonight to test bomb a load of drivers as im looking for a new one.

This list will probably get added to

Did you try adjusting the loft? I couldn't really get the ball into the air with my TM R1 driver at the standard 10 degree setting, but once adjusting it to 11.25 I hit the ball beautifully with a very nice flight.

Didn't adjust the loft but having previously had my R1 set at 8 degree and my 913 set at the same, never really had an issue with getting the ball in the air before. This wasn't just going up and then straight down, it was like playing a 3 iron off the back foot sort of flight.

Very sensible!

there's your problem James....

This is a low forward CG design driver so absolutely you have to increase loft to launch it properly- if you think Dustin Johnson moved from 9 to 10.5 to get his launch conditions right you should be increasing loft too

Worrying that whoever was 'fitting you' didnt get you to try a higher loft as it means they dont understand the technology of the of the golf club

Did you not pass it off as a tiger style "stinger" :D

Don't judge me! It's rainy and wet and I can't play proper golf this weekend :(

It wasn't really a fitting, just a wanted to have a bash out of interest but we did say that were I to properly want one then I'd almost certainly 'loft up'

I held the pose ... for longer than the ball was in the air!

What loft was on it?

A pro on YouTube, Rick Shiels, did a test (not overly scientific I accept) and he hit the SLDR further at lower loft... Which goes against the grain of the latest marketing campaign.

This was exactly the issue that I had on the TM SLDR fitting day courtesy of GM. At that time they didn't have a high high loft variant (which they now do) and why I ended up with a RBZ Stage 2. Tom, the TM fitter spotted this issue immediately. I wasn't getting sufficient spin to launch the ball due to the low CG.

Apparently TM have just brought out a 14 degree version of their SLDR driver, presumably for people who can't get the ball into the air with the standard model!
