I've read a few posts and reviews on the SG5 and wanted some specific advice from some people who have them.

I tend to play the same 2 or 3 courses most of the time and as such pretty much know the distances to greens, hazards etc etc. They are all pretty well marked so I can judge the distances pretty well.

How much value is a SkyCaddie in this situation ?

I've got a programme called TeeShot Live for my iPhone which I use for scoring, and it has GPS capability which I occasionally use, but it's not blindingly accurate.

The only other benefit I can see from the SkyCaddie is measuring out my shot distances so I get a real idea of how far I'm hitting each club.

Apart from the fact this type of thing appeals to the gadget freak in me, I'm not sure about it.

Any owners here with some feedback ?

Thanks

Used mine on the weekend to our 4th hole, 128yrds to an elevated tee (which I knew was in the middle of the green as you drive by it when getting to the car park!), out came the 9 iron and ended up 1ft from the pin.....birdie.

My mates were very sceptical when I bought mine and now if I out-drive them as I walk by they ask "how far have I got Pete".

Also think about it this way with greens 45 yrds long it could be two clubs difference!

Well please with mine. (I have the 2.5)

I play my home course regularly and like the OP thought I know the distances pretty well until I got my SC. It has given me so much more confidence in course management knowing how far I have to carry bunkers etc and knowing when the shot is on and when to hit a different club and play a % shot. I recommned SC and if you don't fancy paying for the colour one the 2.5 still gives you everything you need.

I have an SG5.

Benefits of this type of device to me are:

1/ knowing where the front of the green is, so if the pin is at the front I can fire at the front, but not be short.

2/ Ditto for pins at the back, but obviously not be long.

3/ Measuring shots, but may be best left til spring.

4/ Knowing carry to bunkers or dog legs.

I notice that since getting it, I am hitting up to the pin more. Since before, if the pin was at the back, I would look at the 150 yard mark and pull a club that to be honest would probably get me to the back 1 time in 10. Now, I am regularly getting to the back. It is a confidence thing, knowing the yardage to the back enables me to pick a club where my absolute sunday best will go through, but 9 times out of ten I am right, or in the middle of the green.

I didn't think I would use it much on my home track, but now I have it, I can't imagine playing without it. It is so much quicker and easier and more accurate than pacing it out.

Also, kids keep nicking our 150 yard posts.

The carry over bunkers etc is useful on new courses. On your own track you kind of know if you can carry them.

The distance measuring is a bit of an emasculator. You never know how short you are til you measure it (with every club). I guess most of us think we hit it further because we all call it from one shot we hit last summer when we ripped it. But that isn't going to help club selection really.

Bit of a ramble, but I hope this helps.

Guys, really appreciate the feedback.

I think I'm sold on the 2.5.

I've got £300 of Amazon vouchers from Frequent Player Points from my other addiction, online poker.

So I'm off there now to get rid of some of em :)

Now what shall I spend the rest on ? New wedge me thinks.

Cheers again.

Just ran over to Sainsburys and flicked through the copy they had but couldn't find anything on skycaddie or gps systems.

What month are you looking at and what does it say ?

For people who have one does the SG 2.5 have a backlight? I am just concerned about how easy it is to view with a smaller screen and being black and white. If it doesn't have a backlight I may have to hold off buying one and get the SG5 when funds permit. I really do want one of these though now! All the talk from people who have them makes me hugely envious.

January issue lads, Lee Westwood on cover, page 108.

Basically the Sonocaddie V300 £269.99 is the one to have, loads of cool graphics and really in depth, however, for £129 you can get the Caddy Lite that does exactly the same for a fraction of the price, however, it is in black and white.

I like the function in the Caddy Lite in all you do is press a button when you tee off and thats it, it knows what hole your on, where you are etc Its proper simple to use.

They also give the Sureshot 8800 £199.99 a thumbs up, looks a bi naff in my eyes.

Great thanks for the heads up. I've just canceled the SG 2.5 order and I'll have a read of the review before I make up my mind.

I'll have a nose at the other products whilst I wait for the mag to appear on the shelves.

Have to say having looked at the sonocaddie website I'm not that thrilled by the graphics. It has a digitial scorecard and can measure distances but I think the SC5 is visually a better product. SC5 for me I'm afraid. When I was looking to get a GPS I looked at Caddylite but as my course wasn't mapped there seemed little point buying it.
