Sky coverage of golf (or lack of).. rant)

Been watching Sky's coverage of various PGA events, they seem to have some decent tech but two things that really really bother me..

1) the relentless betting advt every 5 mins. There is a separate thread currently about it. It has made my 5 year to ask me 'Daddy, what is betting?'... so not impressed.

2) But it is interesting to see the lack of coverage of the Europeans. Even Rory struggles to get screen time compared to relative unknows on the PGA. Yesterday, I think there was a good 5-7 mins of Mickelson waiting for the green to clear while Rory was almost on highlight. It is irritating to say the least. I know it is American and they will show their guys, but do show some Europeans if they are in the top 10.

Also what other Europeans are actually playing in this event ?

The betting adverts have been covered in detail - if there is an issue turn over when they go to an advert

Sky don't have much control on who they show. It's the same reason why there are so many ad breaks/breaks from the action as it's all controlled by the US broadcasters

To be fair to Sky then do tend to cut to the shot centre or studio every other break so it's not wall to wall breaks in the UK while the US are on another ad break

Its an Americsn tour, in America, broadcast by Americans for a primary audience of Americans... I think your expectation level might be a tad off.

Complain to the BBC about what? The fact Sky have pushed the price of sports up so high it doesn't provide value for money for a public service broadcaster to compete??? Been plenty of threads about the evil that is the license fee but I sure as hell get £145.50 worth of value out of it. Much more than I ever got out of Sky when paying the guts of £600 a year.

As far as I know Sky doesn't have any cameras over there, its all coverage from American TV.
I dont know much about it but why couldn't sky send there own cameras over there for Sky customers? Probably a really simple answer to it but I dont know

Complicated TV rights. Think Sky only by rights to the live feeds for broadcasating. They don't buy the rights to actually be responsible for creating and distributing the feeds. That would be super expensive. We have the issue as well that TV watching in the states early parts of the rounds aren't watched by many due to timings. We are lucky in the sense that UK boradcast gets all the action at evening time when people are chilling getting ready for bed and watching the golf.

I watched Sky coverage of the European Tour from Spain yesterday... as far as I recall nearly every shot shown was of a European, cant recall seeing footage of any Americans though

I also watched quite a bit of the tournament in Spain yesterday. The coverage there was well spread. Whether they were Sky cameras or Spanish cameras I don't know but it was very fair. The winner, James Morrison, was quite superb, and we got to see quite a bit of the chasing pack although none really threatened. (Just checked and Peter Uhlein in 69th was the top American). If only Francesco Molinari could putt. What a player he would be but yesterday was as painful as watching Sergio at times. Reliable off the tee, great irons, missed putt. Over and over again.

The difficulty in last nights coverage is that it was a procession and so there was little else to show. We got a lot of Mickelson and Rodgers, oh the agony of the 17th, but precious little else. As has been mentioned the leader board was US dominated so whoever covered the event it would have been an American fest.

Taking the feed from the host broadcaster is common and is done either by choice, cost, or because the host broadcaster owns the rights. Sky have to take what they are given. The alternative is no golf at all.

Don't disagree with you at all. I don't have a problem with the BBC but the OP obviously has one watching the Sky coverage so what are his other options? I don't like paying £800+ for the Sky package but it is my choice and luckily I can afford it (at the moment). I don't know how much Sky pay for their coverage but I doubt that the BBC will ever be willing to show weekly PGA tour events whatever the cost.

This issue comes up from time to time. My response is that you should watch a PGA Tour event in the US and by comparison Sky's coverage looks like it is directed by Steven Spielberg. U.S. Coverage is full of ads, filler, nostalgia, interviews with sponsor CEOs. Painful and almost unwatchable. And if Tiger is playing, forget about seeing anybody else.
