Are the sky caddie fees worth the money, or are there better gps systems out there? I am only looking for something very basic with yardages, not maps etc, and reasonably cheap

"Worth the money" is very much your decision alone. Skycaddie pride themselves on accuracy of their ground mapping service, are you happy with something else? Do you want all hazards included or just basic green data? Skycaddie have subscription free devices too (but they only include green data), and on some of these you can upgrade to subscription later if required, so maybe this is what you want, you get the accuracy of the mapping and only the basic cost of the device.

Only thing I can give at the moment, is that skycaddie is the only one that has an accurate representation of my course layout at the moment.

I've played with people who use other devices and on comparison, the courses I've played there is very little difference in yardages especially at my level... I've considered moving my SGX on to fund the forthcoming Touch model from Skycaddie but I do sometimes think I should save money and buy a non subscription device... no doubt I'll be buying more of their kit though as the Touch looks really fantastic!

As a note, I follow a chap on Twitter who's all over the globe updating courses for Skycaddie so at least I know my fees are being used as promised... how accurate are other courses after a given time?

Two things;

1) The accuracy of Sky caddie compared to many of the competitors.
2) I'd spend more than that on yardage books/course planners per year.

How much are the annual fees ?

If I didn't think it was worth it I wouldn't be paying it.

Will rephrase

Have you compared a Garmin etc to the Sky Caddie to see the difference ? my golfbuddy is on it's way out so will be looking to get a new one

I have a very good allegience to Garmin from my cycling/triathlon days but wondered how they compared to the other brands too. Not keen on a watch either, got enough of them

I have on occasion played with guys who have a Garmin. When we've been stood on, say, a marked sprinkler head or 150 marker, the Sky Caddie has usually been the more accurate. Equally, there's been the odd occasion when the Garmin has been more accurate, but then the discrepancy has been a lot closer...

How big a discrepancy are we talking ? Seen 5 yards difference between a watch and a GPS unit for example

I have no doubt that Skycaddie are the best for accuracy and that the service that they offer warrants a fee. My only issue is that your device becones useless if you do not subscribe. If your course has not changed you still need to subscribe to use the device. I can still use my car GPS with old maps and woukd have hoped that golf GPS devices would be the same

That's how they used to work. For a couple of years now, if you don't pay the fee they just give front, middle and back - no distance to bunkers etc.

But if you play other courses that have had changes and needed to be mapped and updated by Skycaddie? Can't expect that for free in my opinion.

I've only ever had a Skycaddie and the £30 a year is nothing for the amount of use I get out of it.

Have you thought about the garmin s1 watch? Gives yardages to front, middle and back of green. No subs fees, 1000s of courses already preloaded and with the pricing ranging from £100-£130 it's not gonna break the bank. Never heard a bad word against them.
