I changed from BT to Sky in February this year and have felt my speeds have been getting slower of late. Ok, I live in a village and don't expect super fast downloads but when I did speed test prior to changing I was getting 3.21 and even 4.1 I then changed and didn't check speeds but, for what I do on my ipad was ok. Recently I have checked and downloads are around 0.25 !

I spoke to Sky last week, they said that they did a line check which was ok and said it must be the router and they sent a new one which arrived today. I installed it lunch time and on test got 2.81 which was a vast improvement, then this evening was back to o.30 to 0.50. I rang Sky and they did a line test which they said I'd lose the phone line and took my mobile number to ring me on - something they didn't do on last weeks test. They now say there's something showing faulty but my phone system is working fine.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

i had the same thing last week Chris with Sky too. I am a fibre customer, i saw on the install the line was capable of 40mb, on wireless i was getting 25 ish which is fine. however, last week it crept down and down, then it was on about 8!

I called them, they did the test as you say and said there was a fault and they would contact BT to fix it. well 3 hours later, my doorbell goes and there is a BT guy. he has been to the switch up the road and tested, no faults. so he starts his diagnostics in the house, eventually he traces it to a dodgy cable from the socket to the router. he replaces, gives me a new router "just in case" and now i have awesome speeds again!

Moral of the story, probably gonna go back to BT seeing as they own the lines etc! but it did get sorted really quickly!

Do you have anything other phone extension off the master socket?

the fault could be anywhere from the exchange to your house or even in the house.

Did they test the line to the master socket (the line entry point to your house) then a test to the router to identify if its in the house (bad cable or filter or socket etc) or external to the house.

Yeah, get Virgin;) or move to somewhere that can get Virgin.;)

I live in the middle of nowhere with one neighbour. I'm on BT and they are on SKy and I get around 4mps and they were getting around 0.25. So they have swapped to BT and now they are the same as me.

I recently switched from Zen ADSL to Sky LLU. Zen was fine, very stable and excellent customer service, but max of 6Meg, nothing more they could do. Our local exchange will not be getting fibre anytime soon, so LLU was the only alternative and Sky the only provider at the exchange. The Sky Hub is obviously a rather cheap router, and there was some fiddling around to get it to connect to my Apple Time Capsule, but managed to get it going and so far, so good. Speed is now about 9-10Meg and should climb into the teens. Good value too, especially if you are a Sky TV customer.

That's because you are on fibre

Not everyone has the chance it switch to fibre

If they don't sort it I shall go back to BT pretty quick

No, only the sky stuff

if he is on standard BB i would imagine there is a filter, these do go wrong after time, so that would be my first port of call to check...

They replaced my router and filters

The problem can also be in the exchange and it takes a BT engineer to reset your line to sort it out.
I had very poor speeds from my already rubbish available speed and after a few diagnosis problems a BT engineer came out, tested and replaced my main socket into the house but the speed was still totally useless. He explained that systems in the exchange can slowly degrade the speed until it becomes virtually unusable. He went to the exchange, checked and reset the line then called me to test the speed again. It was running great again, faster than BT customers I know, and fan fine for 9 months or so when the speed started to slow again. Ended up being the same problem with the same fix.
Keep phoning the customer care center and they will eventually get it sorted.
