Right, i have driven BMWs for about ten years, more recently been in a family wagon Volvo XC90.. Can someone tell me why i should not be taking a test drive in the new Octavia VRS estate?

Its an absolute steal with fantastic deals available...

I cannot give you a single reason. Fantastic car, build quality, kit, performance. All very, very good for the price that you pay.

Thats what i was thinking in my head too. amazing how the stigma of the 1980's can stick with a brand.. the equivalent BMW, Audi etc would easily be £10k more to buy..

Well i have requested a drive in one, lets see!!

You will not be disappointed. Audi are the most over-priced now IMO. Saw two cars in a local garage (big franchise) the other day, 61 plate 3 series Coop 325 M-Sport diesel £21,995... 61 plate A4 2.0 TDi S-Line... £26,495!!

No way is a S-Line A4 worth more than a 325 coop M-Sport. It's just nuts.

.... Because it's front wheel drive?

Good point, i have not driven a FWD car for about 10 years! although electronic diffs and diff advances in general almost make this no problem, at the end of the day its a motorway cruncher, not a track day car.

Well thats why i ended up in a Volvo. i wanted a Q7. Went and looked at a 10 plate with decent spec and they wanted £32k for it! I bought my 10 plate XC90 with equivalent spec for under £20k.. OK the Audi looks nicer and may even drive better, but not £12k better!!

I don't quite get how that is a bad thing. Better packaging, more interior space, simpler for the average person to control when/if it all goes wrong and 99.5% of drivers will have absolutely no idea what the difference is. For yomping up and down the motorway I can't see any advantage of one over the other.

As long as you are aware that the same stigma will also apply when you sell it.

Second-hand Skoda have been right up there with 'most car for the money' for quite a few years.
Plenty of 'Car of the Year' awards won by New models too.

Much better in the snow..........front wheel drive.

My dad drives a 2012 Skoda Superb Diesel.....Its a great car, Piles of leg room for rear seat passangers too..... I cant really comment on the VRS.... But he has this car nearly 2 yrs and it hasn't had so much as a twitch..... Lovely car to drive too.... And very economical.

Slightly off topic Rooter.... But what do you think of the XC90...... Iv had 4 Volvo's..... I love them for the reliability and the safety....Being a Panel Beater i know what they are made of...... Plus as you mentioned they are well specced and dont cost the earth......
Currently im driving a 2003 S80 D5..... A miser on diesel for a big engine but next year im thinking of maybe going up a year or 2 and buying an XC70 or an XC90...... Not too sure yet though..... I need space for the Clubs, the kids and a 60 kilo Bullmastiff....

I think its a fantastic car, it has been faultless for the year and 20k miles i have done. However, we bought it as we thought we "needed" a 7 seater. i can count on one hand the amount of times the boot seats have been used. The mrs wants a slightly bigger car, so the thinking is i will downsize mine. I have 3 kids with one still in a pushchair, so the XC90 has been awesome as a family car!

The downsides, as to why i am not going to keep it... Its too big for what i need, i could easy get a 4 ball with trolleys, kit and over night bags in it! its huge!! i can lie out flat in the back with all the seats down! But... It must weigh 1.5tonnes and its auto and its permanent 4WD.. So.. Fuel consumption is not great. I average around 30mpg, on a decent motorway run, it can go to 40, however, when i am doing 20, 30k miles a year, i want something that averages 45 and gets 60 on a run!!

Mine could do with front parking sensors, also i went for the half leather which i think is better as volvo leather is typically crap and the fabric part of the seat is really hard wearing!!

Also, i would have liked side steps, as my 4 and 5yr old struggle to get in and out on their own.

All things weighed up, its an awesome car. just a bit overkill for my needs and i can get less expensive motoring elsewhere..

HTH ;)

Arguably better made than there VW equivilant nowadays

BullMastiffs?

no you are right, VW are up there in expensive these days! about the same as Audi prices... used to be budget... i used to consider VW with ford and Vauxhall, not these days on price!

I had a manual diesel XC90 and averaged about 28mpg over 60k and 3 years. We have a 75 kilo Newfoundland and there was plenty of room in the boot for him and the ramp he uses to get in. Not much fun trying to lift a large wet dog!!
