Can you play a singles matchplay comp off 3/4. i know the rules state full difference but is it up to discretion of organisers to play off 3/4 if they wish?

I don't think the rules of golf stipulate a handicap allocation as far as I was aware this is always done by the committee runing the competion and can be anything they decide.

All I know is that when I finished playing a few years ago it was 3/4 difference and when I started playing again this year it was full difference. I presume its not a hard and fast rule but a R$A recommendation for clubs ??

I recently read on the CONGU website that it should be full shots. But I'm not sure if a club may ignore this and decide on different shots.

I have known of this happening at some clubs but I have never played matchplay off anything but full h/c or scratch.

if the club uses the CONGU system for calculating, adjusting and applying handicaps, surely it should use CONGU's recommendations for matchplay allowances?

I don't know whether a club CAN - I assume a club can do what it wants, but it seems a bit of mix n match methodology to me.

This has puzzled me too.
When I was a member at Crowborough, all matchplay rounds were played off 3/4 the difference, didn't matter if they were singles or betterballs.
Now I notice that singles have "gone over" to full allowance, whereas betterballs remain at 3/4's.
What's the give?

I always remember playing off 3/4's but this years singles summer knockout is full (I know, I gave away 8 shots) so not sure if there has been a change in the rules or a change locally within the club and the way it runs the event

I'm Sure this rule changed last year and i believe it has been passed by all the county's.

Therefore clubs should not be allowing players to play off 3/4.

Is this just for singles, or does it go for betterball as well?

I believe that when singles matchplay was 3/4 of difference the average advantage was about 65/35 in favour of the lower h/capper. Now, as singles must be played off full h/cap difference, the lower h/capper's advantage is "only" about 55/45.
