I know this has been don before but couldn't remember the outcome.

When I played this morning I was stuck behind Lord and Lady snob and caught up with them at the 3rd, they teed off and said Morning young man (tossers! im 25!) when I asked could I play through they said "No as you have no right as a single golfer!" My reply was "yes I do and I will be done in 5 minutes", they said yes after a debate between them and moaned about life etc. Any how I hit a great 5 iron off the tee (STRAIGHT!!!) and carried on my round.

I just want to make sure I was right and they were just being plonkers, is it in the rule book?

Here we go

Page 28 Etiquette

Priority on the Course
Unless otherwise determined by the Committee, priority on the course is determined by a group’s pace of play. Any group playing a whole round is entitled to pass a group playing a shorter round. The term “group” includes a single player .

Pace of Play
Play at Good Pace and Keep Up
Players should play at a good pace. The Committee may establish pace of play guidelines that all players should follow.
It is a group’s responsibility to keep up with the group in front. If it loses a clear hole and it is delaying the group behind, it should invite the group behind to play through, irrespective of the number of players in that group . Where a group has not lost a clear hole, but it
is apparent that the group behind can play faster, it should invite the faster moving group to play through

htl,

The old "single golfer has no standing" went out when the last revision was made at the start of this year.

Tarquin

quite right single golfers have the same standing on the course as 2,3 or 4 balls. So many people are still unaware of the rule change that viscount17 and DCB correctly point out

Interestingly enough I met the bloke who suggested this rule change to the R&A at a golf day on Wednesday

when I first got into golf i played a lot on my own and indeed these days still do enjoy the occasional round or few holes on my lonesome. I feel it gives me a bit of quality me time a chance to think things over and some peace and quiet

Rule changes like that are often not notied by those that have been playing for a long time. They only remember what the rules were when they started playing golf.

But in your instance they might have started playing that round of golf before the rule change earlier this year. :D

If I am on my own and I can't get waved through, I miss a hole out, and walk on to the next, provided there is no one in front. If you do this on a longish par 4, hit your drive up behind them, then pick up and walk through, you never see them again.

Er...Yep! Did you manage to blow the dust of their 1935 rule book as you played through?

I think it was the best inclusion of the R&A over the past 24 months, it gives single golfers a place on the course and speeds up play.

I have experienced a 4 ball in front of me, and by no means was I playing fast and the 4 ball behind caught up to me, this was quite off putting (no pun intended ;) )and as I didn't want to ruin my game I asked to be let through as there was a clear hole in front and they where being slow, the answer was a mumble and moan, so I reminded them of the R&A rules and was going to show them in my book when they let me play through and I was a hole ahead with in 2 holes.

Mike, what did the R&A people say when asked about it?

I suggest for future reference you carry one of the free rules of golf book available to pint this out. I always carry a rule book as many of the seniors at Ascot still don't see singletons as anything but a nuisance and shouldn't be allowed out. Also handy as I know it is there for competitions. I just keep mine in a small sandwich bag (keeps it nice and dry) in one of my bag pockets

I do Homer, if they had put up more of a fight I woud have pulled it out.

You can get them free form the R & A website, I think.

Didn't think about asking to join them then

He had his trousers tucked into his socks, a golf ball retriever and novelty head cover on his driver! And his Mrs took about 15 shots to get off the ladies tee!

Similar subject so hope am not Hijacking....

Was starting a round of golf the other day with the FIL and a gentleman seemed to rush to the tee before we started. FIL really dislikes playing infront of people he doesnt know because he gets embarresed when he fluffs his shots and gets worse each stroke. So did I break etiquette by deliberatly not asking the chap if he would like to join us? I think thats what he wanted but I knew the FIL would have been really uncomfatable with this and seeing as I lodge under his roof, I didn't want to rock the boat!

I did however ask him if he would like to tee off before us but he said no, he was happy to play behind at his own pace.

I felt bad for a while!

Who is FIL? is it some secret code I should know?

You did the right thing, I get flustered when playing with someone new for the first couple of holes. I don't like it though when people force (ooo err) themselves into your group, if its busy no problemo but when its not.
