After several mentions of 3 or 4 (??) putts I have typed this to see if I can help you.
First I will admit I am no golfer - tho when I get off a tee box I can play to about 10-12, unfortunately I can't drive for toffee.
On the other hand I can putt pretty damn well, and using the worlds simplest technique I have helped all my partners putting too.
My technique -
-Get shoulders square to target line
-Clear the mind (don't think of putting)
-look at the ball- then trace the line along the ground and look at the hole
-retrace the putting line back from hole to the ball#
-Realign if necessary (95% of the time)
- Do it again (this time you will prob not need to realign)
-Now simply putt (complete the stroke - and only look after putter has moved past the position of which the front of the ball was in)
I find the process focuses on line and speed - but its the subconscious thought rather than the forefront thought that works.
Try it it works great for me (and some others). I know it's just a 'routine' but it works well.
As way of repayment PLEASE help me to learn how to start with the legs while not forgetting the club face.
