Ok guys quick question which I'm sure you will all laugh at but I've just joined a club and got. A handicap now will that handicap only change if I enter competitions? I don't suppose it will change if me and a friend go out and he marks my card? Just with me working shifts I can't enter as many comps as I'd like sorry for the daft question

You can get your handicap reduced either by competitions or supplementary rounds (up to 10 a year) - declared first in the pro shop, play with your mate, submit card on your return and job done.

Cheers mate so as long as I declare with the pro before I go out that can be a supplementary card

Supplementary Cards are allowed. Only 10 per year and, unless Club allows more, only per week - Monday to Sunday.

Marker has to be qualified to be a marker - normally a member of the/a club and with a handicap.
There are also other requirements - see your club/Pro for details.

It's not a daft question at all, so don't feel anyone is going to laugh at you.

As gryffindor says, you can enter competitions and also submit scorecards as "Supplementary Scores". The latter have to be played as formal stroke play rounds to the rules and marked and signed as in a competition. Check on two things before you do this. Firstly there will be a procedure at your club for notifying in advance that you are going to submit a supplementary score. It could be to report this to your pro as said, but worth checking in case it is different at your place. Secondly, your club may stipulate who is authorised to be a marker - for example, it might insist that the marker is a member of the club and holds a competition handicap. That doesn't make it a complicated process - just check what the procedure is.

Supplementary Scores are intended for exactly the kind of situation you are in.
