Well guys I joined Royal Musselburgh last year and paid almost 1200 smackers. Half of that being the entry fee. This year the fee has gone down to 300 squid. Now, for this weekend only………wait for it, the entry is £1…yes, one hundred pence plus 580 subs. This year the club has lost 100 members and gained only 25 or 30, who I presume paid 300 notes. If that’s true then I cant imagine how they feel, but I’ll tell you this, I feel sick.

Okay, times are hard but I beginning to wonder if the club council while making it attractive for new members, don't realise the problems with existing members not rejoining.

IMO At times like this they should cut the membership fee to hold onto what they’ve got. The way I see it they’re on a downward spiral with no waiting list to fill the gap. I hope I'm wrong and I do love the place.

Ouch! :(

Tommo, this must be a proper kick in the Davina's everytime that radio ad comes on.

What is the existing members view on the ad campaign as when I heard it this morning (in Glasgow) my instant thought was "they must be really struggling".

my neighbour who's a member feels the same and is leaving when his current membership is up. seems a few members aren't happy with the way it's being run.

I really don’t know what’s going on and in many ways I don’t want to know or get involved. What I think is happening……. the so called credit crunch, the opportunity to join other clubs for less money, more golf cubs opening and playing limited golf on winter greens at the same time as being asked to pay 580 smackeroonies not long after Christmas has got to be a bad thing.....It's got to be paid by the end of january.

I played the course a few times in 2007 before joining. Now, I can’t play on the medal tee when I take on a guest. If you want to attract new people, like what happened with me, you’ve got to think long term. In my area I can go to a few courses as a guest and play off the medals.

In comps they have the same people playing with the same people time after time and that is not a good thing IMO. Way too many people in their comfort zone.

Great course though and I’ve met a good few really good genuine guys, besides I’m sure most people mean well. I’m beginning to wonder if they’re putting the cart before the horse and I get the impression that some people put up strong arguments for not changing instead of trying to find ways to change.

I think a lot of clubs in the Lothians are struggling. Glencorse have dropped their joining fee this year. My own club have a deal which vastly reduces the years subs if a joining fee is paid. Lothianburn and Swanston are both trying to attract new blood. Hard times indeed.

Bit of a bummer for yourself having paid all that last year. I think R M has cycles like that though. Its a strange club in some ways if you know what I mean.

Tommo21..can sympathise with you on this..that is a lot of dosh to hand over and then seeing it chopped for new members!
At our place, fees are held at £655 but to get new members in,an incentive of £100 off your fees for each newbie to sign up for full membership has been unveiled!
So....Who wants to join a tricky,hilltop course,really friendly membership,wonderful(?) clubhouse..with great food!!!!
Now,now...don't all rush!
Form a nice orderly queue!
Shame on anyone being so small-minded to think that I'm trying to save myself any dough!!!!!!!Not at all,I'll invest in lessons and in the bar(need to keep people in gainful employment----what drink problem?&^%$£"!)
Open to offers as of now, just pm me!(pretty please?)

JIM

Same scheme at my club, money off for every new member you introduce. Seems like a fair way of attracting new people whilst looking after the existing membership.

Still, would rather they dropped the whole joining fee idea or maybe reduced the joining fee and cut the subs slightly for those who have already paid.
