Should CSS be jibbed?

If you score 37pts you should get a cut. I don't care how easy the course played. I'll take all the .1s when it plays hard. But, reward success.

Ps. Please (mods) add a simple yes no vote to this 👍

Stableford points are only related to par, not the length or difficulty of the course! You could have a par 72 course where none of the par 4's are more than 300 yards, or another one where they are all over 450 yards. That is the whole point of SSS and CSS.

Spot on. Should 37 points get you a cut on for example 5,500 yard course in perfect conditions, when some one else has battled round for 35 points on a 7,200 yard course in a gale. Who played the better golf?

I totally agree.

My handicap, like most people's, is totally based on how tough/easy my course is and I can just as easily cock a round up on an easy day there as blitz it on a tough one or vice versa. I don't see CSS meaning that on the odd day I shave par that I don't get the cut that I've played for. I know the reasons why it's done but would, like the OP be happy if CSS was scrapped

Lets say you ditch css but your course is par 72 sss 70. You still won't get cut for 37 pts.

True but at least your handicap would be based on how well you play and not influenced by how everyone else plays...

But your handicap also has to travel and be comparable to those of players who play courses where the difficulty is more influenced by day to day conditions than SSS rating allows for.

Two things determine the difficulty of a course, the layout and the conditions on the day. Why only include one of them when benchmarking for handicap?

I can see that argument but conditions of the day can be variable throughout the day and not always influence scores in the way you might think.

CSS at my course usually = sss which is the same as par.

I do understand that but it does seem the most pragmatic way to assess how the course was playing without resorting to gauging wind speeds and stimp readings. If a lot of pros shoot in the 60's at a tour event what do you conclude about the course even if a few poor souls have a mare?

Our CSS has gone up frequently this year due to rough, and hard fast greens. Seems fair that should be taken into account as compared to a course with no rough and soft easy paced greens.

Also what about the fair weather golfers? Is their handicap comparable to those who are happy to play whatever the conditions? (assuming here that most people wnat to play off the lowest h/cap they can).

I used to think maybe CSS should go up but not down but in truth I don't think that is in itself a big deal.

But it's still being influenced by other scores.
If everyone else played well or badly, CSS would move and you would get a bigger/smaller cut or even get a 0.1 back.
In fact your club looks like a good example of why CSS shouldn't exist.
If your CSS is always SSS then CSS is irrelevant.

But what about my club where CSS is often above SSS; +3 and +2 in 2 of the last 3 medals I played in and SSS is already 1 above par.

It isn't always.

i dont get the point of this thread.

if lots of others played/scored well, that suggest the conditions were good to enable such scoring. Seems fair to me

Don't be bitter, just play better.
