Had my first short game lesson today, fantastic stuff

Learnt so many things and a very good teacher

Worked on pitching and chipping, pitching needed the most work and I can see this will help if I practice what I have been told, excellent and well worth the price

Where did the Pro ask you to put the ball in your stance and the lean on your club shaft out of interest? where you using the bounce of the club or the leading edge?

Ball in middle of stance, no shaft lean, balanced weight and played aka PELZ method ( Pitching )

Just got to learn my yardages with my wedges at 9 o' clock etc swings

She also gave me good advice about how the lie was and how this changed the choice of club, ball spin etc etc

Stan Utley ( Short game Guru ) recommends using the leading edge for chips and the bounce for pitches. He says using the bounce of the club gives you more room for error. Believe Phil Mickelson has mentioned this also.

To anyone who is considering getting a set of short game lessons..... DO IT!!!!!!

I'm in the middle of my course of lessons after averaging 3.8 strokes from 40 yards in.

Just played a round and this has gone down to 2.8

They are cracking and make a huge difference.

My pro gave me a lesson ages ago, when I came back a few months later saying I was playing poorly he told me to check my stance and instead of a lesson just go and practice what he had told me to, so I spent 30 mins on the practice green chipping as instructed and suddenly I was better than ever!

Sure enough the ball had crept too far back and I had started to lean the shaft, I was then either flicking at the ball or lifting up.

Chipping is pretty simple:

Ball in middle of stance

Rotate body

Trust the loft

Finish nicely through the ball...

So many times you see people chipping with just their arms, they finish a chip with their body still facing where the ball was. How on earth can that be consistent?

I now have a better understanding of technique and a goal to achieve

1. Learn my yardages based on new method
2. When chipping goal is to at least be within 3ft of pin

Sounds like plenty of practice but this is the one area when shots can be saved more so than spending hours lashing at balls at the range

2. When chipping goal is to at least be within 3ft of pin

Why is your goal not to hole the shot? You can see the white in the cups eyes, why not go in for the kill?

I did a bit of chipping practice recently, I was aiming to hole every chip. In the space of 30 mins practice I had holed 4 and had many come to rest on the lip.

Make your target as focussed as possible, when you practice do set up a 3ft radius circle to end up in but your goal is to hole the ball!

SB he said at least. The idea is to get your distance control right - what is my lie like, what's between me and the hole, what club should I use, where do I want to land it, how will it react in landing. If you can then get your pace judgement right you'll hole your fair share :)

PS it's all about setting realistic targets. When you get better she raises the bar. That said if every chip you hit finished within three feet of the hole...

Thanks Tiger, you were right she is a very good Pro and it was one of the best if not the best lesson I have ever had

First step is to work on improving and then as SB said aim to hole my chips but that is too big a step at first and the reason for the at least 3ft is the % chance of holing the putt afterwards

3 different clubs from the same place.
Each giving a different flight and run

On that video, all three balls went to roughly the same place. How do you decide which club to use? I would think a lower lofted club is lower risk where there are no obstacles in the way, on the basis you don't need to hit it so hard to get the distance - is that right?
