Second hand market I'm sure I could dig up some bargains and have a better quality set-up for the same money.

Apart from my new putter (my old one came off ebay for £20) and driver which I paid £99 for, and seldom carry
My 3 and 5 woods came in at £35 for both (although I had to re shaft the 5 wood that was £20)
My hybrid was £30
My irons cost me £100
My wedges were £39 for the 56 and £25 for the 52, and the nz9 lob wedge (when I include it in my set) was £10
So about £240 all in

I dont know your handicap, personally if i was on a budget and starting off golf, i would get a second hand set of ping g15 irons, ping g15 driver, ping g15 rescue 23 degree, A cheap blade putter ping anser design, all second hand off the bay, leave the fairway woods and when you confidant to use them and look for a good deal. I reckon you could get the irons, driver, rescue and putter second hand for 400 quid

Total £225 and all in excellent condition and had the satisfaction of beating two guys at the weekend with the same handicap as me who had spent £1, 500 plus in gear

The ball doesn't know or care how much the shiney it was hit with costs.
There is so much wonderful second hand gear out there that, provided you do a bit of research, you can't go too far wrong. I'd say don't stray too far from established brands and if in doubt ask here.
If searching on ebay its always worth seeing what's for sale locally as delivery can push the prices up.
