Shooting your age.

My regular PP managed a 76 round our course a couple of years ago.

He was 77 at the time, the age I am now but I can only dream of such a score. Even in my forties I only ever managed a 78

We were contacted a few years ago, not long after WHS was introduced, by a local club who were looking to increase the handicap of a player, He was off 3 or 4 and they were looking to move him to 8 or 9. I had a look at his record and thought that it didn’t look too bad for a 3 or 4 handicapper but his scores were drifting upwards - I then noticed his date of birth, he was 89. (edit he was 92)
Almost every score on his record was considerably beneath his age with the best one being 14 under his age off the white tees at his fairly tough 6600 course - a phenomenal achievement.

I haven’t checked his handicap record for a few years but just had a look and last year he shot his age again last year, off a course 6200 yards long, 95!

This is my ambition this season, at the age of 79. Two of my mates have done it. One shot 78, aged 84 & that included a double hit, which was illegal then. The other shot 69 at Allendale, which is a very short course. My problem is lack of length & a poor short game. I can have rounds where I just miss a par on multiple holes where, honestly, with a bit better short game I could be 7 or 8 shots better. Never seem to get a birdie in competition either, which makes all the difference. Looking at it pre round I need 8 pars & 10 bogeys, which is not too much to ask. However multiple near misses & the odd careless disaster wrecks my card &, before I know it, I've shot 90 again. Frustrating, but I won't give up.

I am getting just about to the 'prime' age to do this, 70 next year. However my best ever gross score is 71 and most recently 76, therefore much work to do. I still think that I am fit enough to do it but fitness is a diminishing commodity.

I used to play with a chap who was in his early 70's at the time, I guess I played a dozen rounds with him and he never shot more than 68 on Par 70/72 course(s). He had however been a 2 handicap or better for more than 50 years, he was a real education to play golf with.
