How do all,

Does anyone have any views on Shooters Hill? I'm looking to move from my current club and shooters hill will be the closest members club geographically.

Specifically, I'm interested in understanding how social the club is, if there are many schools on a weekend, how many competitions are run etc.

Cheers muchly in advance

A good mate of mine is a member and he says it is really good. Not been there myself though.

Very sociable and relaxed in the right way - I play with a couple of groups one Saturday, one Sunday, I only joined last September and found myself with playing with them straight away!

Comps through the Summer are just about one every weekend (I'm quite glad the season's tailing off now!) normally on Saturday, only the club trophy/scratch cup first day is booked tee times.

There are social events run too, eg. chippy tea one Friday a month which I'm told is very good, although I've not asked if you can get gravy/curry/mushy peas with it!

Let me know if you (or anybody else) want me to sign you in I'm there both days nearly every weekend!

A top course, was a member there many years ago. Would still be there had I not moved sites with work.
Is the spike bar still tiny and is Dave the pro still there?

Keep meaning to pop back there for a game

Yes and yes! There's been talk about expanding the spike bar but I dare say that's been the case for donkey's!

Always used to make me chuckle, the spike being rammed and you look round the main bar and the potman was sat there twiddling his thumbs :D

Wonder if they's make me pay the joining fees again

Cheers for the info - I might take you up on your kind offer shortly!

Definitely sounds like my type of place - although I'd be in need of mushy peas or curry sauce for the fish and chips!

Does seem a bit daft, but then they do fill the dining room and main bar for Sunday lunches with folk in jackets and ties - admittedly not many young'uns!

I've heard of some going away for a couple of years and not needing the joining fee again.

How is the club for welcoming relative beginners to its ranks? My partner and I took up golf at the start of the summer and are now enjoying the local public courses - well, those out at Orpington. We live just down the hill in the Royal Arsenal and were thinking it would be great to join and support our most local golf club.

Hi - I'm in the process of applying for membership (I don't know anyone that plays at the club) but everything seems very welcoming about the club, so I can't see it being an issue for relative beginners

Off-topic, but out of interest how is the Royal Arsenal these days? I used to live down there a few years ago and it was great, although pretty much a building site!

Thanks, that seems encouraging. I suppose I should get myself over their one Sunday to play a round with the missus to make sure I actually like the course :) I've sent a membership enquiry the SHGC website, now to see if they come back to me.

Anyone know if they do discounts for couples joining the club together?

I've been living there since 2004 (and I concur that it really was a building site!) and its turned into a wonderful place to live. Much more of a community spirit with a good pub and a great cafe onsite. With Crossrail coming in 2018 and more enhancements to the Woolwich area, it's a very pleasant place to be.

I've not been aware of any beginners or problems with beginners that doesn't mean that one or the other doesn't happen. It's a friendly club so I can only assume there wouldn't be any problems.

High Elms per chance? That was my local public when I started.
