Had a great day at Sherwood Forest Golf Club on Friday, met up with a few lads off HDID of which 4 of us are on GM also.

As you can see from the attire, it was very cold but it did get warmer as the sun came through.

I'd not played the course before but heard great things and I wasn't disappointed. Some of the views and backdrops of the holes, especially some of the par 3's were stunning.

The greens were a little slow at first but they did seem to get quicker as we moved around the course. Some large undulating greens and some very testing pin positions.

Only a couple of fairways that had mats scattered within a marked area that had to be used and were not a hindrance to use at all.

Some large and well placed fairway bunkers caught me out off my drives and I found a few greenside bunkers also where if you landed just short of the greens which were raised, the ball always ran to the hazard.

Straw & Heather lined the fairways and the tall pines in the distance gave it a great all-round look and feel of a quality course.

They currently have a winter deal in operation, we had a full cooked breakfast, toast, coffee or tea on arrival and 18 holes of great golf for the princely sum of £35

Looking back at their medal tees and knowing how far we had to drive to get a decent fairway position with a chance to go for the green in regulation looked a totally different proposition, especially knowing that the straw rough would be up higher, but I'll be looking out for their Opens next year.

The clubhouse was very friendly and the service also excellent.

If you've not played it, you won't get a better deal than the winter deal we had for what I thought was a quality course.

This course is on my hitlist, your pics have just whetted my appetite even more. That's a cracking deal they have on, you can pay £25 for most muni's!!

My pictures don't give it justice to be fair Gordon, there were so many more great views but I was playing well and holding the honour in my 4-ball from the 7th through to the 13th so the phone camera never came out much, not that I'm overly competitive :smirk:

That is a fantastic deal.

It is a terrific course and glad you enjoyed it. Just a shame about how 18 looks after the storm damage this year. It was closed for some time while they cleared up. When I played it in 2013 it was excellent and I was lucky enough to play it in the summer when it was tip top. This year I played in a betterball open in June and thought that was great value at £55 for a Sunday including a meal.

I have penciled it in for 2015 and the open comps booking is live on 2-1-15.

I can also recommend Lindrick and especially Hollinwell (The Notts) as exceptional Nottinghamshire heathland courses.

Thanks for the link, I've just bookmarked it, might be good to have a mini GM meet whilst playing in their open.

Sounds like a plan :) I will try to remember to give you a heads up of our tee time once booked, it's the Portland Fourball I will be entering.

The back 9 stretch of grueling par fours broke me last time. The length off the white tees was an exceptional test!

The 1 hole I just didn't get the index for was the 13th, I totally messed that hole up and then found 3 bunkers on the 14th Si 1 which caused my 2 hole wobble, otherwise I was playing very well at that time. Definitely a course that once you've played it you know where not to go!

Here we go again opening a can of worms.

What do you mean by "I just didn't get the index"?

Where's the popcorn........

People need to stop worrying about stroke indices.

Historically they were set up to suit matchplay format, not necessarily how difficult a hole is.
This is why you will find index 1 or a very low index on or around the 14th hole. It is set to suit the ebb and flow of a match and strategically placed there as it's likely a player may need a shot there to keep a match in the balance.

I've played it twice. Once off the yellows for the deal in the OP last winter, and once off the whites in a matchplay comp.

Off the yellows its a good course. Off the whites it's fantastic, especially the stretch of long tough par 4's on the back 9. I loved it.

Thanks for the link to the opens, I'm all over it!! :)

Can you please stop being reasonable about this? It's Saturday night and we're looking for a bit of controversy. And perhaps it might also be around the 5th hole.

12 to 16 are scary and could destroy a decent card and just for good measure, they throw a 203yd par 3 in the middle of them. I didn't quite understand the 16th, off the yellows its a 482yd par5 but off the championship tees its a 471yd par4 but not sure what the par is off the 496yd whites?

Playing next week on a courtesy. Various Notts clubs helped them out earlier this year when they had the tornado that shut the course for a few months, and they have responded by offering a couple of free fourballs each weekday until the end of March. Top club. Looking forward to it.

I saw no signs of the damage that was caused so they've obviously worked very hard because without reading about it on here in this thread, I wouldn't have known!

Great when clubs and local businesses that are naturally in competition with each other pull together for the greater good, restores my faith in people.

Because that's how us Nottinghamshire midlanders roll. Not like the capitalist pig dogs down south or the flat cap wearing northerners...;)

Glad you enjoyed the club, not sure if you met Stuart the pro but I have lessons from him and he's a very good chap. The performance range they use there is excellent and he does a good deal on G30s. I would love to join the place at some time, but it is very difficult to do so.

I played Sherwood Forest a couple of years ago and loved it. Now I am looking forward to March when we play it again. You have got to hit it straight or you are in trouble and as Fish said, some great views.

I liked Lindrick too but we did not see it at the best time. It was tipping it down.

Seniors open sounds good.
