It has to be.

Nothing on the official Newcastle website, Sky Sports 'understands' BBC Sport 'understands'

No official quotes anywhere since the story broke.

I think it may have been someone close to Ashley who broke the story not expecting it to get so big and now they're trying to work out how they can tell the Geordie massive it was a joke.

As a Boro man along with KeefG, the "big club" that is the cloon getting relegated would ensure all my Christmas's come at once.

However, this also shows how every man has their price. I recall a certain Mr Shee-ra saying on MOTD not too long ago, and I quote: "I AM NOT INTERESTED IN THE NEWCASTLE JOB". Funnily, when Mr Cash-lee waives the wad, the fickle come running..

Totally emotional appointment and money for old rope if you ask me. If they go down, not his fault. If they stay up, he is more god-like to the blind skunks than he is already.

This has - hopefully - recipe for disaster on a Keegan style scale written all over it.

Rant over and apologies for any offence

As a lover of golf and a non interested party in football, I find some things hard to understand.
I can understand people follow their favourite team (not always their local team :D)
What I dont understand is their deep hatred for anyone who follows an opposing team. Fan = Fanatic?
A friend of mine who is a qualified PGA pro follows Spurs United (is that right?)
He hates any Arsenal player or supporter with a vengeance.
I believe its the same in Scotland with Rangers and Celtic and many other local derbys. Is football that important?
My father took me to a match between Rangers and Raith Rovers in about 1970. I spent the whole match asking my dad if we can go and play golf now?
BTW Raith beat Rangers 2-1....apparently.
I'm just pleased that the GETINTHEOLE crowd dont start fighting the YOURTHEMAN crowd at golf tournaments.
Personal rant over :)

As a neutral on the subject, I think any lifelong fan of a club would go to the helm of their club if asked. I think he said he would have no interest because at the time someone else was in the job and deserved support. Now that there is a vacancy, regardless of duration, he feels dutiful to do what he can to help them stay up. Its a schmoltzy emotional appointment alright I agree.

Bobmac, to the real hardcore supporters, it is very tribal and feelings do run very strongly indeed.

I despise arsenal, with a huge passion and Wenger repulses me. I dont wear red, my daughter doesnt wear red andI wont own a red car. The reason, red is the colour of the scum.

I have mates who are arsenal fans, thats their choice, I would never be petty enough to compromise friendships because of football.

As I say passions do run very deep, as a rabid yid I also hate West Ham, Chelsea, Newcastle & Portsmouth hugely, all for various reasons.

All I know is that I love my beloved spurs and when Im sat in the park lane lower, and the ball flies into that net, It is the biggest, most euphoric high there is, if only I could bottle it.

Sorry to hear about your illness medwayjon ;-)

I've fallen out of love with football over the years, I still want my teams (Ossett Town & Middlesbrough) to win. But I don't care when they lose. I see that Boro are 2nd bottom and going down and there is not hurt or upset attached to it anymore.

However, the teams I hated when I was a committed fan are still immensely disliked and I enjoy seeing the likes of Ossett Al*ion, Farsley Ce*tic, New*ast*e and Sun*erl*nd struggle like hell.

I would rather Newcastle went down than Boro stayed up!!!

Although a Mackem I wish Newcastle all the best with their new recruit.

I supose if I still lived up there I might be a bit more tribal, as BobMac puts it. But as a Mackem away from home, (the south still feels like a forign country to me (anything south of the Humber is south to me)) my afinity with with the North East is stronger than any rivalry I ought to have.

So even though black stipes are the wrong colour good luck all the same. :D
