divot - i`ve got a mate who`s suffered with `thomas the tanks` for naerly 2 years, been through 5 coaches,(one of them is in the `gm` top 25 )so if u`ve had the odd one spare a thought for him!! r u suffering from them at the moment and what du think is the problem..euan
Had them real bad when i was 16. Could not break 110 playing of 7
Shanked every iron in the bag including a 3 iron on an uphill lie. Always had a flat swing, two club pro's who shall remain nameless tried to get me swinging more upright and made it worse.
All it took was 5 mins on the range with Jim Farmer at St Andrews (used to coach the juniors at my old club). He noticed my weight was moving forward during my swing and stuck a ball under each foot. Had to dig them out as my weight had pushed them so far into the ground
Divot me owd fruit.
I know how you're suffering.
Had the sally sockets last October - started a week before I went on a golf holiday at the Parque de Floresta in Portugal. Was absolutely gutted.
I'm 5 handicap so usually a pretty steady solid hitter but I thought I'd never play golf properly again. I have never experienced torture like that before. I was hitting some corking drives, middle of the fairway, gap wedge in and woosh! a lucy locket into the crap.
Got to the stage where I was terrified to hit the dam thing tried all sorts of quick fixes to solve it with no success.
My problem was caused by not getting the club in the correct position on the back swing and then coming over the top on the down swing.
I bought one of those 'Inside approach' devices which forces you to bring the club from the inside so its virtually impossible to come over the top and hit it with the socket. By the way, I would recommend this device to anyone that slices or fades the ball severely.
Anyway saw my club pro when I got back and as soon as I got the club in the correct position on the back swing-it was cured (touch wood).
Just as a footnote, I bought the latest copy of 'Golf Monthly'(November issue) at the airport and it had a large article on the dreaded !
My advice to anyone would be to get a lesson ASAP.
How dare you mention the S WORD on this forum i try to put them out of my mind!!!!!! ha ha ha, got a real mental block about them if you say shank to me you can bet one is coming in the next few holes......you buggers!!!!!
Im beyond worrying about shanks these days, last year I had no inkling of hitting one and on the practice groun. I hit one with my 6 iron, changed to an 8, did the same again rght down to the wedge, then decided they wernt worth worrying about and stood a touch further from the ball and made sure my left arm stayed as straight as possible to lessen the chance of getting too close to the ball and all has been fine since. On the practice range I actualy try to hit the odd shank just to prove to myself that it takes ite an effort to find the hozzle.
Apparently you are not a 'real' golfer until you have had an attack of these.
Had the shanks and the yips. There is almost no affliction you can have in golf that I have not had. It is a miracle that I still play at all. Currently hitting it fat.
