totally pissed off. Was striking the ball wonderfully today. Got to the 7th and tried to open face and hit flop style shot. Hit the hosel i think or severely open face. ...anyway laughed it off.

Two holes later i hit 3 in a row with a range of irons.

My gut feel is that i am not closing the face...i tried some practice swings bowing my left wrist and it feels way better.
I usually do this but wonder if i have stopped releasing clubface and if this can lead to these socket shots.

Must be something in the air. I'm going through a bout (although making swing changes) and others on here seem to be suffering too. Hope it's a one off for you

It's called lagging the hosel. Your perception of the sweetspot is the hosel.

Notice when a top pro shanks one they don't do anything different on the next shot to rectify it. They simply misjudged the sweetspot.

Hit some shots with your index finger and thumb off the grip in your right hand.

I hit a cracker today. 5 iron. Right out of the hozel. Awesome shot. Height, distance, it had the lot.

Toughest shot in golf?

The next iron shot.

It's my "go to" stock bad shot. I can go weeks without one then suddenly two or three pop up in quick succession. Drives me flippin mad and can't see what on earth I'm doing differently..

How would this help?

If you open the face you have to align left of target (right hander) and swing down your foot line. If you just open the face and swing as normal you will get a visit from the shankapotimus!

Someone on here recently said something very insightful.

Imagine a a wall follows you round the course, you cannot see or be affected by any previous shots, good or bad.

Shank is nothing special, its just another miss hit like something off the toe.

Treat them special and they will act special.

I hit a beauty playing our 17th yesterday. I was trying for something special - I got something special.

I sclaffed my new ball in play as I was pee'd off that I'd been so casual - but as I know why I do it I was then able to put it behind me and hit a peach of an approach shot to the green

Thanks for all the replies.
Good news is i now understand what was causing my shanks. I was fanning the clubface open on backswing and this put my left wrist in a very cupped position at top of backswing.

from this position i was presenting the hosel to ball first. I now keep face pointing at ball for as long as i can and the face is almost shut and left wrist flat at top of backswing.

I expect this is a common shank cause so hopefully can help others. I feel brilliant as my irons are flying off the face with a wee draw flight.

i used athletes foot spray to see impact marks and can now hit it off the toe if i want....... thats more than a wee draw though.
Cheers guys

The old finger and thumb off the grip works a treat, use this drill myself on the odd occasion I'm afflicted.
