So as not to ask questions on the custom fit thread.

I'm fairly uninitiated in all the shaft options available today as soon as you get past Regular or Stiff!

Is there a resource online or through one of the manufacturers that directly compares different shafts (mainly in irons from my point of view) which would help you understand how each of them play?

i.e. I currently play S300 shafts in my irons. I tried some irons that had a Nippon NS Pro 950 stiff shaft at the weekend and they felt really, really light to me. So, is there anywhere I could look to see if there are any other Nippon shafts more "similar" to the S300, or whether a PX 5.5 or 6.0 would be in the same ballpark etc?

May be a "how long is a piece of string" question so I apologise in advance!

Maybe ignorance is bliss..... :D

I hate to say it, as Im going to come across as a bit of a mizzy fundamentalist, but you really should try somewhere that has the Mizzy swing DNA set up. All the info you could want. I prefer a heavier shaft and ended up with the KBS tour stiff. I tried the project X 6.0 and just couldn't get to grips with them. If you don't mind the drive, then Clays golf at Wrexham has the Mizzy national fitting centre and is completely free...

Thanks for that, appreciate it. Sure it will be useful once I take in all the information in there and try and understand it!

As you find the shafts that interest you go to the manufactures web sites and they will give you more info on the construction and kick points and the like. If you are a bit of a nerd like me you start to get interested and learn a little.

Nippon shafts are pretty light compared to TT DG. Rifle and KBS shafts come in somewhere in between, depending on the model. Shaft weight is one consideration, but the trajectory you get is another. With TT DG, you usually get a lowish launch, but some spin, so the ball can balloon if you really compress it. Some other makes, such as PX and KBS are designed to give a higher launch but a flatter penetrating flight.

TT DG S300 come out about at about 5.8 on the Rifle scale, which is almost spot on where PX 5.5 (the 5.5 does not relate to frequency) and KBS Tour stiff also lie. The best Nippon option if you want some weight is the 1150 GH Tour which is something similar in flex.

Thanks for this. The clearest explanation i've come across! Really helps me understand the differences across the makes.

The nippon 950 aren't for me, felt like i was swinging a garden cane!

This I can concur with. At my Mizzy fitting, the Swing DNA gizmo pumped out these 3 shafts as the ones best suited to my swing. TTDGS300 then PX5.5 then KBS Tour Stiff.
