Shaft flex question on callaways

About 12 months ago I bought a set of X2 hot irons which were fitted by callaway guys. It was recommended that I get regular flex shaft (true temper speed step 85 steel). I can't remember what my swing speed was.

Last week I was using a GC2 launch monitor and noticed that my swing speed with a 6 iron was 87/88mph and it was suggested that stiff shafts might be better suited to that speed.

Does anyone with the same clubs remember their swing speed and what shaft they have?

Thanks

This may be relevant, I don't use Callaway irons, but, when I was fitted for my Mizuno's I had a swing speed fast enough for stiff shafts, but when I tried them they were horrendous, so the fitter put a heavier regular shaft in, which was way better.

So just because your swing speed suggests a stiff shaft, it may not give you the best results. A fitter will go on the numbers, a good fitter will listen to the clients feedback as well.

For me the numbers told the fitter that the NIPPON N.S. PRO 950GH in stiff was what was needed, but after a few swings and talking to him I chose NIPPON N.S. PRO 1150GH TOUR in regular.

this is absolutely perfectly described.

My swing speed is easily fast enough for X flex shafts across the board. However i've been using S300 for the past 2years and on my recent fitting, it was decided still not to move to an X Flex.

Same with my driver, its a stiff shaft tipped to an X Flex.

A swing speed doesnt automatically mean that you should use a certain type of flex

At that SS you are probably in the low end of the Stiff range, so going either way is fine. I am in the X-flex range, but I go with a stiff in my driver and 3W as they suite me better.

Do you hit the Callaway OK is the question. If you do then I would not worry about it. If you are thinking about changing, then get hold of an X2 hot in the same shaft but Stiff and compare the results.

I'm pretty happy with what I have but I do have a tendency to hit a push/hook when I really step on a shot (that could just be my swing). I think it is more a case of doubt has been put in my mind and I don't really know enough about shafts and swing speed

87/88 6 iron is likely to be in the "probably stiff" range for irons, depending on tempo and release, and almost certainly in the stiff range for most mass market driver shafts. The Speed Step 85 is also a rather light shaft which adds to the feeling of softness. You would probably find a S flex in the same shaft easier to hit than a S300 Dynamic Gold, for example.

One of the newish trends, although more often seen with drivers, is the pretty stiff but also pretty light combo, say a guy who would be OK with a conventional weight S flex being put into a X flex in a lighter weight. Some gurus would say that shaft weight is more important than flex for most players anyway.

Getting some launch monitor data captured by your pro is the best idea.

i think that is the swing, as the flex of the shaft actually bends to the ground at Impact due to the inertia, hence why a correctly fitted club sits slightly toe up. So if anything a shaft that is too soft will bend more towards the ground digging the toe in causing a slice.

Thing is I know what you are saying because once someone puts an idea in your head regarding your clubs, it's hard to step away from it, because we all want to be better and blaming our kit is the easy way out. 😳

As a slightly left field alternative rather than go for stiff why not do as I did and get the shafts hard stepped so I am still using a regular flex but it feels a little firmer. Like the OP my swing speed was on the cusp of R and S and I struggled (perhaps mentally more than physically) with the stiff version so it was a decent compromise

Hard stepping (or soft stepping) is a way of getting an intermediate flex which is stiffer (or softer) than the starting flex, usually by about 1/3 of a flex per step.
