First things first, I know absolutely zero about shafts. Nothing.
So go easy on me, but I need some advice.
I am looking to buy new wedges and have been offered a bargain but they include ‘Rifle 5.5 shafts’
I have been advised that a ‘Heavy regular shaft’ is good for me when I see someone about my driver, but is it the same story with wedges?
I have looked on the internet to find the flex of these shafts and the best I could find was ‘in between regular and stiff’ so it sounds like they will suit well.
Obviously I know this question is open to interpretation, and one man’s stiff is another’s regular, but I’m really struggling here.
Over to you guys, for some helpful insights hopefully………

We need to know more about you really.

Rifle 5.5 are softer than the later Rifle Project X 5.5 do you know if they are PX or the older Rifle?

How far do you carry your 7 iron? (all 18 holes should be the answer heheh) but How far do you carry the ball from your 7 iron through the air?

What i would advise Craggles, is if you can, go and get custom fit for irons and wedges. I only did this so i can understand what shafts i needed in my irons and what i needed in my wedges. I tried out loads of different options and simply just took the evidence away and now i can purchase what i like the look of in the custom fit shafts that suit my swing and game.

It cost me nothing but has gained me plenty of knowledge

Thanks Jates, that is probably the best thing to do.
For the short term, dont think I will be able to partake in this luxury for a few months, so just wondering whether I should take the plunge with these wedges or not.
Suppose I could always sell them if they dont tick the boxes.

There isn't any mention of PX that I know of. Is Rifle the brand that make Projext X shafts, as I've heard of Project X?

My 7 iron I would say I carry 165ish

They will be absolutely fine.

I have some Nike pro combos irons that have rifle 5.0 shafts and also vokeys with project x 6.0 . Both are absolutely fine, I just prefer the 6.0 after trying them in a set of mp 52 ' s.

I still use the rifle Nike combos now and again and work just fine.

Getting 'the right' shaft for wedges is a far less sensitive/important area than it is for a Driver imo - even though wedges are the 'scoring' clubs. However, if you happen to find a combo that feels and plays well, then it's worth sticking with.

Rifle 5.5s are relatively heavy, mid-flex (Regular+/Stiff-) shafts, so should be fine for you. Rifle actually (used to) do a 'spinner' shaft that is actually designed for wedges.

Edit. Rifle and PX shafts were both made by Royal Precision (PX was designed by Kim Braly of KBS 'fame'). Royal Precision was bought by True Temper a few years ago.

This is what I thought too, but not having to much knowledge, 2nd guessed myself.
I dont tend to play too many full shots with wedges anyway, more for pitches and chips around the green so wondered how much the shaft would impact me

That's the reason the shaft in a wedge is less important!

TT also do a 'wedge' shaft, but that is almost always simply an S300 that is slightly lighter than standard - and would be labelled S200 otherwise.

rifles at 5.5 were classed as 'firm' (KB's Rifle scale 5.0 R, 5.5 F, 6.0 S but the 5.5's weigh in at 120g. (Braly one of the foremost shaft designers out there)
they could be around 10 years old

The shafts will be totally fine. Rifles are indeed pretty old now (although some lines in the the Direct Golf John Letters range have them) but should still be a good nice feeling shaft to play.

They play very differently from PX, which feel harsher to many players and which are about 0.5 firmer on the Rifle scale.

Thanks for all the advice guys. I picked up on a couple of you saying these are old shafts, well they are part of a set of SM5's, which I know aren't old. Guessing these aren't the stock shafts then, I wonder if and why they were changed?

Just been doing some research and found my irons have Precision Rifle S-90 shafts in them which are deemed to be similar to 5.8, and are 125g.
So wedges at 5.5 and 120g should be perfect me thinks

Still a bit miffed how old they are, and in some new clubs

Don't worry about the age as long as they are in good condition - i.e. free from damage and corrosion. They were (are) a very good quality product. I'm using some old (10 1/2 yrs now) Rifle 6.0's and they function just perfectly.

They are a really good shaft. I would think that if True Temper had not purchased Royal Precision that the Riffle would still be in production. It could simply be that whoever owned the wedges before loved the feel of that shaft and had some in his stock.
