Does anyone else's home course have this problem? Played our first medal off the back tees on saturday and they were a flippin' mess. Obviously no restoration work completed over the winter.

Having had a chat with a couple of the greens committee the reason is that as we need a measured course for a qualifier (fair enough) the greenkeeper just keeps the markers by the stones all the time. We end up with with a really poor middle part of the tee by the stones but the front and back are immaculate.

I suggested that surely it wouldn't be unreasonable to put 6 at the front of each tee, 6 in the middle and 6 at the back to maintain the measured course? The answer was that as the greenkeeper doesn't play golf he doesn't appreciate this can be done. My response was that I understand that but we have a greens committee, a club pro and club manager who do all play golf so surely they can give the greenkeeper some guidance??

The rest of the course is comin along nicely so I know I shouldn't complain too much but with just a bit of thought with very little effort, the tees could be as good as the rest of the course.

Rant over!!

I'm confused.... Are you saying the markers are never moved thus the spot get very worn? I think the course can vary up to about 100 yds and still be a measured course for medals etc.

our tees are small and several don't get much sunlight but were good off the stones for the first time this year.

by mid june, the par 3 tees will look like the Somme.

i'd be in favour of putting high quality mats on all the par 3 tees and using them as the yellow tees all the time, but for some reason the thought of hitting off a high quality, well installed, flat artificial surface has some members apoplectic.

Probably a daft question, but what are these stones you speak of?

Just had a read up on the definition of a 'measured course'. The course can be increased/reduced by up to 100yards and stll be a qualifier. But regardless of that, you make perfect sense - have some tees 5yards back and other 5 yards forward! simple

For many years we've had greenkeepers who were also golfers. It's a great help. Last year one of the assistants cut the holes in semi darkness for the following day's competition. He's not a golfer and, on the first, the hole was on such a slope that people were 4 & 5 putting. Last ones off were about half an hour late. Next day I put my tee shot close to the hole and my mate bet me I wouldn't get a 3. I had to hole a longish one for a 4.

Remember the back furthest back you can put a tee marker is two club lengths and then another two club lengths so there is enough room to swing a club.
So many clubs break this rule.

a solid, well reasoned rant - even including good suggestions for improvement

9.9/10

On a serious note, we have three 9 hole loops and generally the tees are pretty good, except the par 3s where in my opinion you need a good tee. Our whites on these holes are small, and most are that worn they play more like an upturned dinner plate....... A very small level area that gets worn quickly.

Rumours are that once the subs are in, the whites are being rebuilt and extended across the course to give a greater playing area:thup:

I would have thought that the owners would have learnt the lesson from their 'sister' club. The poorly designed/built tees were a major gripe by members and Greenkeepers there!

The their credit based on the pre purchase condition the improvements have been massive, suppose they have to regenerate an amount before stage 2 can kick in..

I am just to move course coz of how bad a state its in...rough, tees, greens etc nothing is kept well so ive had enough and moved less than half into my renewal year....

The last couple of years we have had a couple of manky tees. When I spoke to the head of greens during a scratch match he did give what I thought was a valid reason why they have deteriorated over the last couple of years and why we have planned work to help them.

The answer....

Supplementary cards.

In the past the tees got rotated a lot more, however now people can play supp cards any day the course always has to be within 100 yards of measured distance. Where as in the past when there was no comp on the whites would be pushed forward etc to ease usage (we can use whites at any time and most people seem to use whites for bounce as well as comps )
