At my club there are comps all year round which is great.

In the winter the "first weekend of the month" swaps from Medal to S'ford...I am playing in the comp on Sunday and we are back to Medal as it is March.

I assume the rationale for S'ford vs Medal is course condition .... personally I think April would be a good time to switch back, for example we are still on winter rules

How does it work with your club?

Pretty much the same. Winter is limited to non-qual stableford comps and "fun-comps" such a 5 club challenge etc. Medals start again mid-March and are then every Saturday until end of October. We have Stableford in summer too but these are Wednesdays.

We have one medal and one stableford each month plus board comps

We have added more stablefords over the years as that's what the members wanted and it was more enjoyable for them

Medal virtually every week from April to October. One stableford i think..

Winter there are loads of 4BBB and other silly ideas. Yellow ball, texas scramble, 3clubs etc...

Or, in the case of this winter............. Nothing!!!!!!!!!!!

I don't think we have a set rule but for sure at this time of year any comps are Stableford.

The rest of the year its mainly medals when playing as an individual apart from about 3 individual Stablefords in there and then the odd team game in between (Am-AM format etc)

First medal is Spring medal in the first weekend of April & looking forward to it.

My first club ran s'fords fri, sat, sun with one medal on the first weekend of every month.

I think it also ran other midweek comps, it had 600+ members though. I miss that place like mad!

Stableford is a hackers charter, and is the work of the devil. Burn it!

We have stablefords in the winter months, and only mid week during the year. I have no idea why.

Stableford sucks. You always get the old '43 points with a blob' rubbish. So that's 43 points then, and the 13 you had on the blob hole would have wrecked your medal card and taken you out of the prizes. Can't see how someone who doesn't finish the round should be in the money. It's a nonsense. The bloke who invented it should be dug up, and shot. Twice.

But it does make it more enjoyable for a lot of other golfers who don't take the whole thing too seriously as well as helping keep rounds a little quicker. Clubs sticking with medals would reduce the amount of people playing competitive golf.

You forgot to mention that it's also how your handicap is calculated!

April to October most of our Saturday comps are Medal, with a couple of Stablefords and team games (4BB, Am-Am, Scramble). We also have No Tee Reservation Stableford Qualifiers most Thursdays and Sundays which are pretty popular.

I think it's a good mix. Only people who aren't satisfed are those who hate comps.

Medal and stableford competitions are strange things.

You can only influence your own game and it is against the rules to affect others. On top of that the game is balanced based on your past performances, your (and all those others in the competition) current ability or form could be vastly different from that.

With all those things in mind there is no reason to complain whatever position you finish, you scored what you did and that was all you could do.

At ours it goes medal, stableford, medal, stableford etc with the odd different comp now and then. Medal is real golf for me and makes me concentrate more as one bad shot can cost you the round. In stableford it's not as much an issue.
we have a 26 handicapper in our group who scores 20 odd points on 9 holes with two blobs. If he plays well you don't stand a chance. But his blobs would be 12& 13's.

we have a monthly medal every month weather permitting. Club champs and mid week club champs are both medal too. Each month we have one midweek medal and one midweek stableford. On top of that all other comps are either team events or stablefords

I think many club golfers much prefer Stablefords, because one really bad hole doesn't completely wreck your day! They also tend to to be much quicker, because once you can't score, you can just pick up your ball and proceed to the next hole. :)

Most of our comps down here are Stablefords. When we do run medals, 5 hour plus rounds are not uncommon! :(

We used to be a proud club and laugh in the face of stableford qualifiers through the summer.

Sadly a few members have now decided to have a good moan because they are crap and want somebody to make the game easier for them rather than get better.

The club have given in and changed a fair few of the comps to stableford. They have also put a few betterball/ team comps in the main part of the season.

Tail wagging the dog again. Absolute joke and typical of golf.

Not a fan then? To be fair to clubs it is a more embracing format which means more members will play. We certainly have a lot of senior members that won't play medal as the carry on the third is too long off the whites. It has made a huge difference to entry numbers.
