Hi,

I posted a thread the other day entitled "new clubs". I havetried to reply to some of your comments but it says that the moderator needs to review my comment before it is posted. Anyone have problems like this before?

Anyway I was looking for your opinion on some of the following cheap golf club sets - i.e. which ones to stay away from and which ones are good value.

http://www.americangolf.co.uk/golf-clubs/package-sets/fazer-ctr20-package-set-259815.html

http://www.thesportshq.com/prosimmon-v7-golf-package-set-1-inch-longer-black.aspx

http://www.118golf.co.uk/golf-clubs...te-package-set-right-handed_ct1550pd15849.htm

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks.

Hi, your problem with moderation of posts is because you are new to the forum and posting links. The forum software picks this up as spamming I manually approved thiois thread for you.

Nothing particularly wrong with any of those sets - as budget sets.

However if you intend playing the once or twice a week that you mention, then I don;t believe those are what you should be looking for!

Some used irons from a reputable OEM - like Mizuno, Callaway, Taylor Made etc, a reasonable putter and a good used 3-wood - again from a reputable OEM, would be a better choice. Driver could come later, although same applies if wanted now.

I tend to recommend the MX17/19.23/25 irons - 17/19 are earlier and cast, 23/25 are later and forged, but all great clubs.

Cally Steelheads are great woods that are pretty cheap.

Putters are personal, but Drive4show has several that I would certainly call 'solid' at good prices - certainly for starters.

Good luck - and welcome!

Foxholer,

I am beginning to think that I would be better going the second hand route. Do you think I would be able to get a set of irons, a wood, putter and bad for £150 to £200 price range?

Also where is best to buy second hand. Golf bidder?

Have a look on eBay for full sets of clubs listed in your area. That way you could pick them up and save on delivery which can be expensive for a full set. Another thing is if they are listed as pick up only you tend to get them that bit cheaper as only people local to u will be bidding. I got a full set of Taylormade burner irons, driver and 3 wood for £180. And added a putter for him myself. There are good deals out there.

I recently bought a full set of Wilson 'Deep Red' irons, driver, 3wood, two hybrids, Cleveland wedge plus a BSquare putter and Calloway stand bag, all in very good condition for £70 + £12.50 p&p off Ebay.

There are numerous bargains to be had from people upgrading or giving up and I believe you can practically decide on exactly what clubs you would like and source them second hand at a reasonable price, these days. I've seen some great deals here on the Forum in the short time I've been a member.

I definitely think second hand is the way to go. Buy wisely and avoid counterfeit stuff (usually looks too good to be true) and you will be fine.

Those budget sets are fine, but I think that if you spent just little extra more on getting some branded clubs you would feel the benefit.

You can get some older model clubs now for a bargain. Ive had a few clubs from people on this forum selling clubs. Of course looking on eBay too your bound to come across a few deals.

I have Callaway big bertha irons for sale minus the 7 iron up for sale, amazing clubs Id sell them pretty cheap too

American golf are on eBay, loads of sets under £200.

I know it's not easy but try having a look round first. Looks and feel go along way in golf clubs.

For any beginner I'd recommend MD clubs, was in a golf shop today and he had Seve Icons for £99 which is great value. You'd struggle to find better wedges than MD as well

May be worth a visit to local golf shops, I know most round here have plenty of second hand sets for sale and you can always have a go with them first.

Some may even offer you good deals if you explain you are now starting up if they think they can get you as a future customer they will always be happy to try to encourage you to return

2nd hand is definitely the most economic way!

While MD certainly make good value stuff, the prices are marginally out of the budget.

I'd suggest looking for irons around £75, Wood and or Hybrid for about 30 each (forgot to mention the hybrid earlier) and a Putter at 20-30. That might give you room for a Driver too. Make sure the iron set goes to SW as there's no allowances for other wedges. If not, a 56* wedge is about £20-30.

That iron target might be a touch low. Benross hybrids are cheap as chips and very good.

Golfbidder are expensive!

As suggested, local pickup saves money - which also brings Gumtree into consideration.

I sent you a pm message on Saturday letting you know that I had a set of Titleist AP1 irons that were in good condition that you could have for a modest outlay. They're good clubs which are easy to hit, have regular shafts so would suit a beginners swing speed. These clubs will be forgiving enough for you and will also be still usable for you as you improve/get better. The only downside is that you may need a couple of grips.

I replied to you just now.

Loads of sets on ebay

Mizzy mx100 or 200's are good clubs usually around £100

Don't bother with a 3 wood, get a 5 wood instead much easier to hit

And putters are peanuts usually depending on what you want, sure there's some wilson or benross mallet putters that will be cheap on ebay

If your on Facebook there's quite a good page for buying and selling clubs. There's been some bargains on there of late. Check it out. If you need a link let me know.
