Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

Hi All

Newbie golfer here looking to get into the sport in a big way, having a few lessons and would like a set of irons and a putter to start with. I'm going to avoid getting a driver/woods for now as I don't expect to be playing anything other than par 3 courses for a while.

BUT I want something I can grow into as I progress with my lessons, so I want something decent that is going to last me more than 1-2 years and not want to get something better straight away!

The budget isn't massive, probably no more than £250 for the irons and putter.

I saw these which caught my eye as they include the hybrids, http://www.golf247.co.uk/wilson-prostaff-cx-combo-set-graphite-new-2011.html

And Golf247 have 15% off at the moment so works out at less than £150. Would these be good enough for a newcomer but not so basic that I will outgrow them rapidly?

Would appreciate any advice.

Best regards
Martin

Hi Gareth

Really I'd like to get the irons for £200 if possible, unless an additional £50 is going to get me anything considerably better, which I guess it won't!

I like the look of the Wilson Di11's the best so far, what are your thoughts?

Many thanks
Martin

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

The Wilson Staff irons are pretty solid.

Would you consider second hand clubs? You'd get a good set of second hand irons, possibly a set of pings for that kind of budget.

There are a few sets of Ping G10 irons Ono eBay for less than £150 and there's a Ping Greyhawk putter in the for sale section on here. Should come in under your £250 budget and be quality hardware.

+1 for the G10s, great clubs. Very forgiving and high launching.

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

Thanks both. Second hand wouldn't be my preference but I wouldn't say no without weighing up all the options!

If anything I'd probably prefer new irons but a second hand putter...

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

I've just traded my di11's in today against a set of Taylor made burner os which I got 5-sw and a free gap wedge for £249 , the di11's are good solid irons but I just couldn't get used to the fat shaft and not being able to adjust the lie angle on them was a major factor , ill report back tomorrow how I get on with the burners but they were going a dream today when testing them.

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

As a follow up to Steve's point I'd recommend going second hand too. That way if you don't get on with whatever set you buy then you can sell and not loose too much of your investment.

Hi mate just to let you know if you want the di11s clubhouse golf are doing them for £189 I'd reccomended these and the s3s I know two people who play with each and they're really solid clubs!

Again I would recommend second hand, can get some absolute bargains. Golf Bidder is worth a look, a bit more expensive, but clubs are in great condition plus you know who you are buying from.

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

I would go for second hand set of Ping G10, look ugly but play very very well which is what you need

If you get Di11 you will need to add a gap wedge as the loft gap is huge from PW to SW

However the PING G10 is a normal set and will hold their value

Putter, look at second hand Odyssey 2 ball or Rossie

Re: Irons for a newcomer? Recommendations?

agree with G10's. as ugly as my ex but easy to hit and do inspire confidence.

2nd hand Pings are as good as new, they are cast out of metal that refuses to mark or blemish, bung some new grips on and you wouldn't know the difference in most cases
