Sergio..... Fried Chicken

But its not a racist comment! He was stereotyping. Would it be any different if sergio said. I bet tiger woods is a very fast sprinter. No, of course it wouldn't. He might be wrong but his making a comment based on the majority of sprinters being black. I'm not saying sergio is right but its not a racist comment

As always this has been blown way out of proportion and as always the press have jumped on it and made something out of nothing. It makes me laugh that now Tiger is somehow the nice guy again after all the things he has done to disgrace the support ....

Yes of course Sergio should have known better but come on it was a wise crack nothing else and he wouldnt be that stupid to make a comment like that was meant to be racist. Sergio is not and never has been associated as a racist. I'm afraid its the way of the pathetic world we live in nowadays that someone has to make a story from nothing.

Personally I think that if they have a problem with each other then get in a ring don a pair of gloves each and slug it out like it was done in the old days. Job done. My money would be on Tiger on that one though.....

Mouth meet foot .... hard to believe these guys talk to the press all the time !

European Tour chief executive George O'Grady has apologised for using a racially insensitive word in an interview defending Sergio Garcia.

O'Grady used the term "coloured athletes" while trying to mitigate Garcia's "fried chicken" remark about Tiger Woods earlier this week.
O'Grady has now apologised.

Does someone want to explain why this was edited without notification??? I didnt realise I was in primary school still? There's a full scale race discussion/row going on in the out of bounds area yet my comment gets slammed for no reason? It was not racist nor was it even remotely controversial.... If you wont an allow a slightly border line comment then dump the whole thread!! I forgot Id moved to China!!

I run a forum as part of a business - you do so on the basis you might have some close to mark threads... yes moderate for bad language, personal attacks etc but dont treat us like kids! :( Poor v poor call.

Think Sergio is going to have to do a lot more apologising especially if Taylormade/Adidas aren't happy and threatening to pull the plug. I do think he has apologised in public and we've no idea what he has done privately and whether he has spoken with Woods in any capacity

He's done nothing wrong, let's move on.

To us Brits, it seems like nothing. But in the US, the history and stigma attached is still a very big deal. Taylormade being an American company obviously think its a huge issue with what was said by one of its biggest stars.

Lets be honest, If TM/Adidas are thinking of dropping Sergio then they were already thinking of it before this issue. He appears to have given them an excuse. the only question now is who have they lined up as a replacement? Any rumours about Keegan Bradley surfacing yet...

If they had WANTED to, they would have done so already. They are clearly deliberating this so as not to make the wrong move. What they cant afford to do is be seen to be condoning racism so thats what they are looking into and whether they would lose more sales by dropping him or keeping him.

This is beyond ridiculous now. When is this PC nonsense going to end??? People like George O'Grady have never, to my knowledge, ever been accused of racism, yet because he used a word that was deemed perfectly acceptable and indeed preferable a few years ago, he is forced to apologise. Would someone please issue a dictionary of acceptable terminology for us non-racists to use?

The word 'coloured' has been considered offensive for a good many years now.

Indeedy. Rightly or wrongly it's just one of those that you're best to avoid - especially if you're making a statement in defence of someone who has already made a race related comment!

Mike247 - I guess this is also why your earlier comment was edited.

Rightly in my opinion mate; it suggests that you consider there are two types of people on the planet, white people and then everyone else and by inference that the white group of the two are somehow superior.

O'Grady should be put on display in the Natural History museum with a sign saying 'Stupid' underneath.

And we have so many under represented sections of society playing golf - can't work it out myself

Agreed.

It's a shame about how Tiger has conducted himself over recent years as, at the start of his career, he was a real role model for non-white / posh kids getting into the game. Unfortunately, noone has yet filled his shoes, although I'm sure Guan is doing wonders for Chinese kids taking up the sport. However, with the lack of role models and some unfortunate comments made recently by both the industry and professionals within it, I can't see the general demographic of golfer's changing any time soon.

Top post sir. Great article by Simon Barnes in the Times yesterday saying

The weird thing about golfs racism row is the ghastly innocence of it all. There is a sense of bewilderment, a feeling that nobody has done anything wrong. 'I mean frightfully sorry, we really didn't mean to upset anybody, but some people are, well, a bit touchy, arent they'. O'Grady seems perplexed that a term straight from times of much deeper prejudice, one intimately associated with discrimination in the US and with apartheid, should be considered inappropriate to use in the 21st century. Sergio and O'Grady express all the innocence of the The Major in Fawlty Towers, who sweetly explains which terms of racial abuse is appropriate to Indian cricketers and which to West Indians.'

And then he goes on to moan about the Open being played at a club that does not allow female members and the fact the R&A is an all male club. But as well know as they are a private club they can do what they want, and by sending their most prestigious and money generating tournament to a club that does not allow 50% of the population to be a member they are in no way endorsing that policy. No, no way....

Using a term that is now widely (well apart from in some golf clubs it sounds like) considered offensive is not really PC nonsense is it. And a European Tour executive of a global sport should really know better.

I agree 100% with that.

The thing is that older generations (not trying to stereotype, but it is true in my experience) may use terminolgy that they are not aware may be construed as racist. And that is where difficulties may arise, in that a non-racist person makes what they believe to be a non-racist remark, which is contrued as racist by others.

In that respect, I'm a little uncomfortable with the generalisation that racism is based on how a remark is received as opposed to how it was intended, although I do understand the point.

However, for a person is his position, to make what could be perceived as a recist comment whilst trying to defend someone else making what could be perceived as a racist comment is, indeed, stupid.
