My oldest lad (14) is starting to get quite into the game. He has a club handicap (45) and is determined to bring it down by the end of the summer. While he can hit a decent shot he struggles a bit with his irons at times, he is using an old set of mine which to be honest were cheap and nasty when I bought them 15 years ago. So I was thinking of getting him a cheap second hand set, just to help his confidence if nothing else. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what would be a good buy? Obviously don't want to spend loads, but he needs something ultra forgiving and something that will help him get the ball in the air easily. Also what about shafts, at his age and height (5'5") would he be better with a graphite shaft or just stick to steel?

In the old days we used to look at ladies and/or senior shafts depending on size/height etc.
I had a brilliant Wilson "Patty Berg" sand wedge when I was a kid.

My first set was a Wilson staff set, they are pretty good, I'd say you could find a second hand set online for less than £100. I had the di11's, did the job for me!

Look at something like the X14 or X16. Great clubs and should fit him. Ask your pro about whether graphite would help being so young

Bit of a TM fanboy myself but Ive heard a lot of good thing about Callaways so a bit ebaying may be in order soon. Were nipping out to AG later to look at putters so I might see if they'll let him have a couple of hits on the launch monitor to get his swing speed so we know which shafts to go for.

Hi have a 13 year old who has really got into golf and playing now of 28ish got him some Ping I3 (5-SW) graphites and a Ping G20 ladies driver for £150 added a old hybrid and he is set for a number of years. Suggest you need to be wary of how they transport them I have never used a trolley so always been of the opinion you should carry your clubs.. but 18 holes is a log way for a teenager carrying a bag so just got mine a trolley

Cheers, went to our local AG for a couple of bits earlier and they were good enough to let him have a few swings on their launch monitor, he's swinging just under 70mph so I'll get him something with steel shafts as the guy in the shop reckons graphite shafts are only good for up to about 70. Ebay here we come then...;)

When I was getting back into the game last year I sold my old Mizuno blades and bought some Ping G5's for £85 on ebay. Really good clubs and plenty of help for getting it airborne. IMHO more forgiving than x14/16s and feel better on good shots but that's just me.

Worth having a look though. Can generally get the older Ping models for a decent price as they're not as 'cool' as titleist or taylormade with the added bonus that they can generally be custom fitted pretty easily after you've got them. You can even use Ping's colour chart thingy to try and get ones that might suit his height a little more.

Just my 2 pennies worth.
