sorry if i offend here but playing my club over the last 2 months i've noticed a trend when being paired with random players (seniors)

i consider myself a medium hitter. my drives av 280-290. i hit my first 8 needle striaght today and nothing was mentioned on the tee box. then my 9th rolled up behind a bush the senior said 'thats what you get for hitting it so hard, you want to slow it down and get down the middle'.
this isn't the first time i've been in this possition. every time i hit a long drive or make a par 5 green in 2 i get looked at like i've just sh*t on there front lawn.

am i on my own here?

I think your lot must be a right bunch of miserable sods, played with many senior members and found them all to polite and nothing but complimentary when you hit a good drive.

Ditto. The majority of the Sunday Clubbers I've been playing with are well into their senior years and they're great company. Nothing but banter the whole way round. It's especially worse when you have a bright white driver and you're hacking it round like you've never played before.

i hope for the sake of mankind your right. it putts a massive downer on your game when your playing with victor meldrew. must just be a bad run or perhaps they are being dropped in to others groups as they have no friends :D

If your hitting it 280-290 he was probably on his third shot by the time he got to your ball.....that's why he was so peed off.

:D

If I could hit needle straight 280-290 8 out of 9 times, I wouldn't worry about a snide remark on the odd occasion I missed the fairway.

Seniors in our place are great with the slight exception of one or 2 .. they still think ordinary people shouldnt be in the club so i avoid them .. in general they are great , some great stories ../ in my last club they were ok , there was this one old boy , still playing off 8 mind you , but he insisted on telling me of all the club championships , scratch cups etc he had won . enjoyable up to the 4th time he told me ha.. in general they are good company tho..

I have to echo Toads point.

The seniors at our club are a barrel of laughs and, again, complementary when they see a good stroke (and equally p1$$ taking when you shank one into the bushes)

Certain members are a little up themselves and when you do cork a good shot out they have a face like you've $hat on their wedding cake, but thankfully there aren't many like that at our club.

Think it is the same everywhere. We've a handful of seniors I wouldn't wish to play with as they are the epitomy of grumpy old men but the remainder are a joy to get a game with. Like most they like to see anyone playing well and if you've a good competitive round going will be full of encouragement. If it isn't going so well they'll also try and keep you going and enjoying the odd good shot too. Always good company in the 19th too. I think the OP has been pretty unlucky

Every time the senior hits one of his feeble drives you should say "that's what you get for being old".

You could have mentioned that you were ripping the course up and still getting some bush, all well out of range of the grumpy old man!

Ash!!

You're not on your own there mate. I get told to "swing easier" all the time, except I never hit 8 straight ones in a row!! What people dont understand is that Im usually swinging well within myself when they say it too me anyway.

I love how its always from people who you are beating by ten shots at the time...

Its not just senior players though. I think writing off an entire generation of golfers is a bit harsh

Its clearly jealousy so just brush it off and take it as a complement.

Most of our Seniors are ( haven't played with them all ) a pretty good bunch and love to see you playing good golf, whether it be Timgolfing it large or sinking birdie putts.

Today was 1/4 final day in Macfarlane cup and I was against ex copper from London who is now 80. Had to give him 12 shots and we played in heavy rain all the way round but not once did he moan, just got on with the game and was complementary if I played a good shot .

For the record won 4 and 3 :)

Shared a buggy with a senior on monday in our swindle and it was such a laugh. Mind you, you do get a few rotten apples in the bunch!!!
When I play well with the seniors its the term BANDIT (for a laughter) or when we are all singing of the same him sheet its down non of us are having a good round.

I think you've been unlucky.
I'd bet there are people of all age groups at your club (and every other) that can be absolute miseries on the course.
don't write a whole generation off for a couple of . . .

I've played with seniors at my club and they are nothing but complimentary when I hit a screamer. Probably because they know they'll kill me on and around the greens. The only moaners are the aged pairs with their powacaddy when they catch up my 4ball pulling trolleys up heart attack hill on the 12th.
