Our Senior secretary's position is an automatic place on our clubs full committee, our existing sec. put his resignation in to the full club committee ,but wanted to stay as the senior secretary, however the committee said he could not resign from the club committee and remain the senior section sec. so he was distraught and had to resign as the senior section sec. the committee said it was in the clubs constitution ,which by the way was drawn up in the early 70's surely with todays legislation's this is illegal? help please

If it's a members club then I would suggest if it's in the club constitution it's permissable

Why would it be illegal? As I understand your posting, he hasn't been forced to resign due to age , gender , race , sexuality etc.

Unless there's something actually illegal about the constitution, then whatever is in the constitution stands - until amended.

I suggest that an amendment be drafted and submitted to the next General meeting to amend the constitution so that a substitute can be the rep on the main committee.

There are plenty of 'old-style' constitutions about still!

Sounds as if the constitution needs amending to read "Seniors Section representative, normally the Seniors Secretary". That would leave it open for a Senior other than the Seniors Secretary to represent the Seniors on the committee.
