As a relatively new golfer - I am currently stocked with Regular shafts on all my clubs with the exception of my 19 deg hybrid (Getting on with it well though)

Are there any tell tale signs of when its time to upgrade to Stiff Shafts, ie when I outgrow (if ever, that is) my regular shafts? Distance / Flight / Feedback feel / sound / Fade / Draw etc.

I had a fitting a DG 6 months ago- think my swing speed at the time for a 7 iron was about 89mph if that’s anything to go by?

Its not black and white with swing speed alone but as a guide you were maybe 3-4 mph from stiff at that time. As I understand it though its alot to do with your transition from take away to follow through and a few other factors.

If your overpowering your shafts, alot of your good shots will go left(right handed golfer). Overpowering though is not the only reason for some players to use S shafts. You may not be overposweing your R shafts but may still gain from an S, you also may not, depending on the above.

I would say that 89mph with a 7 iron is comfortably in stiff, especially if the tempo is quick.

Go to a Mizuno stockist that has Swing DNA and have a few swings with the shaft optimiser. That will give you a pretty good idea what suits. According to the Mizuno system, that 90mph with a 6 iron would put you in Stiff or stiffer at even a pretty smooth tempo.

Check this link for a snapshot of the output of Swing DNA with Luke Donald's swing speed mapped on it.

If your shafts are too flexible, typically you will hit high hooks, but people vary and I have seen people slice more with too flexible. Loss of control and too much height are probably likely, though.

Ye I have always thought it should be slice as your flexi shaft would leave the club open?
