is a royal pain in the backside.

I completed my return tonight and despite me telling the tax office every year to leave my mileage out of the tax code they leave it in.

So now when I come to claim my business miles I owe them a little instead of them owing me a lot!

:sbox:

I know that they have already paid me what was due over the year but I'd much rather look forward to April and get a few quid rebate in one lump especially if my mileage drops down as I will be owing them instead. Which is what happened to the tune of £100.

Whats your experience with it?

I'm PAYE, which should mean no worries. I get about half a doz tax code changes every year for the last 3 years.. The company car seems to be the issue. I pay for private miles, yet several times a year they recalculate my code as though I'm not paying for my private miles.

One of the changes last last year was them thinking I had 4 company cars. For some reason they thought I hadn't handed back the previous 3 cars, even though they'd had right previously.

Earlier this year, same again. Unfortunately, between change notification and implementation I had a week to correct them, but I was out of the UK. They recouped over £3k in tax in 1 month. Their offer of repaying it back to me monthly was declined, but then there was a 6 week wait for the money to be returned.

I'm PAYE as well but complete the SA each year for business mileage. I will call them today to check everything out but looks like I owe them £129 instead of them paying me about £1K because they adjusted my tax code despite me asking them not to.😡

I find it very very easy...
But then I have a very uncomplicated business.....

This for me. Changing a company car is the only issue and it happens every time, they seem unable to react quickly enough or deal with it.

Can't say I look forward to doing it but once the information is together it does not take long.

Im also PAYE but because of the 2014 changes to Child Benefit legislation I have to complete self assessment, I have a company car which includes private mileage, but my package includes bonus and commission which means it can fluctuate either side of the 50k benchmark fir child benefit.

complete pain in the arse, however just completed my for last year and have overpaid to the tune of 1600 quid which will come in very handy thank you:whoo:

Wait until Making tax digital kicks in....5 submissions a year for self employed business or rental income required and digital records on computer software will need to be kept.

Tax is only getting more and more complicated for most people, with more and more exceptions to rules. Simple PAYE cases may get easier under MTD(and thats a big BUT!)

Used to do Mrs SILH's SAS Tax Return, no problem. But hers was pretty darned simple. But thoughwebsites can make the simplest things difficult the HMRC one didn't.

If you're PAYE why do a separate return for business mileage ? How does the company record their side things ?
