How many times have you holed a putt when you needed it for a point, to halve a hole or when you have a free go at it because your partner has already bagged a half?

The point is , when you have almost nothing to lose and there is absolutely no point being short you probably put very well and make more putts that way - I do.

Seems to me that my normal, feeble putting is more mental fragility than anything else.

This is my problem, I do not think I have ever holed a putt I was not confident of making.

Was playing once and one of my PP made a point of criticizing my putting, to be fair I was a little offended and made a real point for the rest of the round to be better holed a cracker the hole after then filled with confidence finished the back 9 with some cracking putts and a total 14 putts.

Holing a cracker gave me confidence and I was so much more positive putting that I made more and more good putts as the round went on. Lacking confidence putting makes you tentative and likely to leave putts short imho

Without a doubt a bit of extra pressure makes me putt better.
A putt for a par save or a birdie seem to go in more often that a putt for an easy par do.
My best putt was a 30 footer for eagle on ourshort par 4 16th. Up hill with a bit of break from right to left and it went straight in the middle of the cup.

It's because in the situations you describe you have pretty much already given up and don't care about the result. If you can train your mind to not care about the result all the time, you will make more putts. When you care, you try to force it and forcing it won't help. If you don't care, you let your subconscious deal with it unhindered and since this knows what to do, the results are better.

With me I struggle in that scenario because I subconsciously I settle for a par so mentally I think anywhere close will do instead of making a real go at the birdie.

I'm far more likely to hole it if it didn't matter if I missed, like in the examples above.

Sounds logical but easier said than done, I think I need to be hypnotised:D
