Second shot jitters

What is your handicap. Sorry not gone through 3 pages.
If it is above 18. Put the long clubs away use a comfy iron and chip
Onto the green. Use your shots.

I've never thought about it before, I doubt many have. If you don't see them, why would you be aware of the rule?
Like a lot of questions that seem simple if you know the answer - if you know, you know.

Almost like, something that seems blindingly obvious to some, for example if you know what a boomer is and someone else doesn’t.

I had to Google that as well 😂. As for gen z and gen x ...............🤷🏻

As always, this forum isn't really an accurate cross-section of real life golfers. We're the nerdy few that might know this stuff, most people would be blissfully unaware!
Imagine trying to explain to a normal person the rules (especially some of the unusual ones). 😂

Why do they make clubs you can’t use? 😂

Why can’t I just chuck a ball down?
No you have to drop it from knee height,
But that’s really awkward and I have to stand funny cause my arms ain’t long enough, can’t I just drop it with a straight arm like from shoulder height.
Not anymore mate 😂😂😂

There are so many that wouldn’t make sense to a non-golfer.
I might start a thread

It’s a fair point that for an apparently very simple sport that - totally unlike cricket, rugby, NFL etc - you can explain the entirety of in one sentence (18 goes where you start at the marker and use some clubs to keep whacking the ball towards that hole over there until you get it in; the fewer shots the better) the rules are extremely long, complex and non-intuitive. As golf nerds, people here do lose sight of this.

If golf was played on a simple grass rectangle, like football or tennis, the rules would be very simple. But the playing area is so massive and non standard that it needs to encompass roads, trees, streams etc and the rules have evolved to capture every eventuality.

An interesting one. A pp was up against a tree the other day and hit the ball with the reverse side of his 7 iron. He wasn't sure if it was legal but his score was so bad it didn't really matter. Anyway, I googled it after and it's fine. Seems weird that you can hit the ball with the back of a club but a specifically two faced club is not acceptable.

I totally agree because of the large and differing aspects of a golf course it’s not possible to have simple rules.
I was not moaning about the rules just saying to an average Joe who knows nothing about the game that a lot of them can seem bizarre, once you look a bit deeper they make sense but a lot on the face of it are peculiar.

I do remember there was some discussion about if it could count as 2 clubs.
If you’re right handed you are allowed to take a left handed club if you want to.
This was similar but just one shaft.
I suppose you can have one face like a wedge and the other like a 3 iron for those multi talented people.

I suppose if it has two playable faces that effectively amounts to two clubs and would take you to 15 clubs in the bag.

Although it's still non-conforming if you only have 12 other clubs isn't it? It's a head-scratcher.

Thread update. I stopped carrying the 3 wood. 5 wood instead. Better hits and more often. Not giving up on the 3 but I will use the 5 for the month of May and see where I am.
Ok now it's June and the switch to 5 wood for the month of May worked.
But thoughts are creeping in . Can I go back to the 3 and get a a few more yards ? Not yet but I will take it to the range and compare.

If it's going well with the 5 wood and you know the 3 wood has been a massive issue why would you consider going back for just a few more yards, especially as in the next few months with the summer weather you're going to be getting good distance with the 5 wood and seem to have better consistency.

Consistent distance with a 5W is better than a slightly longer once-in-a-blue-moon distance with 3W. And don't fall for better numbers at the driving range when the lie is always perfect, compared to out on the course.
