Looking to change my petrol guzzling Citroen Picasso for somethng cheaper to run. Looking at spending £4000 so no my options are limited.

Found a coupe on Auto trader, an 06 Fiesta that will do 60mpg and an 05 Vectra that will do 50mpg.

I much prefer bigger cars, always have done, but just not sure which way to go. The Fiesta will obviously be cheaper to run in tax and insurance, and presumable parts if anything goes wrong.

Anyway, do both of these look OK? any hints and tips for buying second hand cars, i've only ever bought new before.

Thank you!!!

Well spotted, I missed that one.

Do you think the 1.6 engine will be OK in a car that size? I've no desire to go screwing it round the streets but like to know the power is there if I needed it.

I didn't know the AA/RAC would check them out - how would I arrange that? Presume thereis a cost?

I have a c-max 1.8 petrol and wouldnt buy another tbh. Not had anything wrong mechanically in 3 1/2 years (its a 54 plate I got with 23k on the clock, now done 45k). The trim is a bit cack, mpg not great and the boot isnt really massive, have to take driver out of the bag to fit in properly! Only decent thing is the headroom.

I would buy another mondeo tdci though and will be that or a rx8 in April when the c-max is getting traded in.

Where did the mpg figures come from, gripitripit? If they're from the manufacturer, then they will be a lot less than that - just a warning, though sure you know that already.

Octavia's are a good deal, and I know a lot of cabbies who swear by them (rather than AT them).

Depends how you drive. But from a 1.6 tdci there is no reason you cannot get 55 mpg.
I have a 2.2 diesel primera estate and can get 50 mpg without ragging the arse out of it.
I have a fiesta van for work and get 60mpg out of that.

Manufacurer says my Picasso (1.6 petrol) will do 38mpg combined, i've only ever got low 30s out of it. Until the last month where I have drived it perfectly (boringly) and i'm getting just short of 38 now.

thanks for the RAC link, and i'm gong to drive the Skoda this evening

SEAT Toledo or Leon (old shape) with a TDI engine.

Mine's 150BHP and I regularly get 50+ MPG out of it and that's with neglect (it's done 130k and it desperately needs a service!)...Had 4 new tyres put on a couple of weeks ago and did a 320 mile round trip to my parents house in Woodhall and averaged 62MPG and got 630ish miles out of a full tank (usually around 500-550 miles).

Even when I drive it for fun the MPG is still pretty good.

Diesel engines = winning.

I've got a vaugue idea what my car is worth, so I don't go into the garage with my trousers round my ankles are websites such as we buy any car any where near accurate when it comes to values?

Don't know if it helps at all, but I am currently trying to do a deal with a guy who owns a 2004/54 plate Peugeot 407 SE Diesel Saloon. 50,000 miles, finished in Silver. SE spec is very good.
Trade price (clean) is £3025.00, retail is about £4500.00.
If I can get £3k for it I could possibly do a deal, but I wouldn't be able to take a part exchange car against it and it would come with no warranty other than my genuine belief that there is nothing wrong with it at all.
He is looking to trade it in against a 2nd hand Qashqai.
