Gone to take a photo and got a message saying my SD card is full?

So off I went to Google and read some similar queries from phone forums and identified its a memory card. I've deleted all my photo's from my gallery after sending them to my computer and its STILL saying I'm full!!

I don't have any music downloaded and only have 3 short videos taken at Cooden, other than that its a phone, I hardly use it for all the geeky stuff so why is this card full?

Its a HTC Sensation.

Thanks in advance.

Did you delete and transfer the photos only from your phone's own built in memory or the ones from the SD card in your phone?

God knows  All I did was go into my "gallery" and sent all the pictures to my computer via email and after they landed just deleted them!

I can only guess by your reply that everything is still on this SD card then? If so, how do I access that and clean/delete everything from it?

Thanks

Don't know that phone specifically but its normal for a phone to have a built in memory (usually smaller capacity) plus the ability to store images etc on a memory card (an SD or micro SD format are popular)

One of the settings in the phone will be for the default memory to which photos are stored (this is normally something the user can amend for their preference) & it can be set for phone memory (sometimes called the device memory) memory card or save to both

I'm guessing that the card is full (as per your post) but when you've linked it to your computer to transfer you've only accessed & deleted the phone memory leaving the SD card still full of other photos etc

An HTC owner will no doubt jump in with the menu sequence to help clear your card but hope this helps explain things...

or an HTC owner will post something along the lines of a long term HTC issue with memory management and error messages! a quick search of mobile phone forums will find many threads on the subject (I'm afraid). I will bet the card's not the issue at all.

I've taken the SD card out, for the first time ever, placed it in a reader and I can see loads of folders and some old Acrobat files from years ago, so I'm a little worried to go deleting anything unless it will have no affect on my phone or links to other things? Ironically I have put my phone back together and switched it on and its working fine without the card in as far as calls, emails and the internet, so, what exactly is it for?

Can I delete things off this card without it affecting the running of the phone or is the SD card part of its engine, so to speak?

, so, what exactly is it for?

As mentioned the phone has two memories, one built into the phone circuitry (for want of a better description) the 2nd on the removable memory card

The amount of data that can be stored in the phone circuitry will be tiny compared to what can be stored on a memory card (which is why you have a card)

So photos, music, video etc etc that can fill a phones circuitry memory in no time will use a fraction of the space available on a memory card

Does the phone need any of the information in the folders on the card to work? if not can I delete everything on the card?

Now that you have the SD card in a card reader (and presumably viewable on your PC) review the contents of each folder and save what you want to your PC and delete rest from the card when finished

The card wouldn't normally have any connection to the 'engine' of your phone but it may have some of your contacts stored on it (telephone numbers and email address etc) which is why you should review each folder first

what capacity is the phone and cards memories? SD cards are dirt cheap, no critical files should be on the SD either, just buy a bigger one = sorted :)

My phone has 16gb, I doubt I will ever fill that lol.

That's all Arabic to me Steve

I found 156 photo's in a folder called DCIM I think and then some other stuff I could relate so deleted all of them, some stuff I was unsure about I sent to My Documents, all the folders of which some have funny names are mostly empty so I've left them.

Just about to put it back in my phone and see how I go...

DCIM is just jargon (think it stands for Digital Camera IMages) but not important

Sounds like those 156 photos were the issue and you can now go and take 156 more :D

Cool, congrats

2GB is pretty small storage capacity these days but used to be considered enormous ;)

You can get 16, 32, 64 etc etc for not many pennies but before you think of replacing it there will be a maximum capacity size that your phone will operate with i.e a 64GB SD card may be beyond your phones ability to deal with

OK, thanks for all your help. I'll look into another card and see if I can find my maximum capacity but I would think I'd be pretty safe with the lower, being 16gb?

You will probably be able to get 4 and 8 GB as well.

Do you not have a cable to connect your phone to your pooter/laptop rather than having to disassemble it to get to the card?
