When playing texas Scramble, if finding the better placed ball is uncertain , can one play the first ball as a provisional and then if finding the better placed ball play from there?

Scrambles are not recognised as a 'proper' format in the rules so this won't be covered but I would not allow this in any format that I was playing in. If you can't find the ball straight away, it can't be the 'best' ball surely, and you get 3 or 4 shots every ball, why should you be allowed a provisional as well?

Why wouldn't you go and pick up your ball though and therefore determine it was better then?

No. Once you've iniitiated the next shot that's the ball position in play

Not within our rules.

The simplest answer is to leave the person who owns the ball with that one whilst the rest of the team decide if they are going to hit another.

The one thing I’ve always thought is that Texas Scrambles are too fast paced for my liking, so I think this would be a great idea for slowing them down!

Are you suggesting that all should be able to take a provisional?
Of course you may use the option of playing two ball if you are not sure of the rule. Then everyone would have a go at the two results. Best of the umpteen played.

Fast paced? I find them quite slow. Especially when the team are deciding which ball to play every time, and then every now and then others having to go off and pick up their golf balls
