Does anyone have one of these putters?

I am looking at purchasing one as I really like the look of them.

Wanted some feedback really as my problem is I dont want to lay out £179 that may be wasted.

My preferred equipment only has a severely crap uneven bit of carpet to try it out on and ideally I want to try it on the practise green.

Sadly at £179 they wont loan me the putter as it is going to come back 2nd hand which I am totally understanding about.

I havent got a supplier locally or pro-shop (with real green) who stocks this putter so I am pretty buggered really.

So any feedback or oppinion is very welcome.

Cheers, Jon

Jon,
I have a newport 2 pro platinum and to be honest i wasnt overwhelmed by it. Im now using an odessey whitehot 2 ball and find it easier to line up and hit straight. try a different supplier where they may have a proper green to test on an ask to try it, a yes putter and an odessey to compare and contrast, you could be having a good day with your touch as any putter may feel great. I personally wont pay more than 100 quid for a putter now.

I have the Studio Select Newport 2 - lovely putter - great weight to it.

As for the £179 - is it worth it? My heart says yes, the head says no however it felt so good when I picked it up it was a must have for me.

If you have the money and you have your mind set on one - get it - at the end of the day, if you buy anything else you'll always be thinking "what if". If its not for you the resale or trade in value is always quite high so you won't take too bad a hit.

The residual value is a big plus for me, if I kept it 2 years it would probably still be worth £120-£130 in good condition so there is that to it.

I dont mind spending £179 whatsoever, I would spend that on a driver in a heartbeat so why not on the most used stick in the bag!

I've got a studio select newport 2 mid slant and absolutley love it. The looks weight and feel are just so good.

I really liked some of the Yes putters I tried, which were much cheaper. I just knew they wouldn't give me that special feeling i get every time I take the headcover off the Scotty.

Medwayjon,

I have one a 1.5 34 inch custom fitted to 33.75 inches with winn grip as I like the more tactile feel. I tried two anser style putters over a number of sessions. The other was the Ping Redwood anser 303 which I think may be slightly better if you played a lot on very fast greens.
However given average UK greens course to course I think the Scotty gives better feedback overall and is the dogs B********s as far as I'm concerned.

You can't go wrong with a scotty as they are undoubtedly great putters. What I would consider is do you like the weight / look / feel off the face when trying it in the shop on the carpet and don't worry about the roll of the ball. You know a Scotty will put a good roll on it on the course and therefore if you pick the right line when using it on grass it will go in. It's not ideal not having a practice green but this problem can be conquered- just decide if the putter suits you in the aspects I mentioned and have faith in it's top quality manufacture / design elements to sink the ball on the course. If you like the feel / balance /weight etc and are missing on the course it will be down to the putee not the putter.

Hi

As a self confessed club ho i have owned numerous Scotty Camerons over the years inc the latest Newport 2 Studio Select.

They are nice putters, but no better than say a Ping Anser. In truth i have never really putted well with them, but they do look good in the bag and hold their value quite well

I have now given up on them and moved to something i can putt with regardless of the name (Odyssey #9)

The only way to know is to try one, i would suggest e bay as you can always sell it on for little or no loss later.

Good luck with your putter hunting.

I have a studio select newport 1.5. My putter of choice. I love it, it has a great feel, and the quality of machining and manufacture is first class. Being an engineer, myself, I still love looking at it.

That said, they are classic putters, lacking some of the modern technology benefits. If you are having putting problems, I doubt this will be your answer, as they need a solid putting stroke to get the best out of them.

For me, I will never buy another putter, as I have found my perfect flatstick.

I find Oddessy putters always sit closed, so are not for me.

Looked at a TM spider today. Is everything I hate about modern putters. Way too busy, but if it does the job for someone, fair enough.

If you are changing putters for the sake of it, bear in mind Tiger has only ever had 3 putters, and the best putters tend to stay with the one favourite. Find one you like and stick with it.

May be putting lesson? £175 buys a lot of lessons.

Also, a lesson may check whether you are better offwith a mallet, or a blade. Just buying a new stick could be an expensive mistake.

Just a few thoughts, but if you do get on with a Scotty SS, then they are lovely sticks. Mind you, if you use one, and putt like a twit, you defo look 'all the gear and no idea'.

Jon, the only putter I have ever fallen out of love with was an Odessey 2 ball, which was still awesome to putt with, it just made me feel sick to look at.

Seriously, you can't judge a putter in Feb, it is a joke.

I have nailed a putting matt to a piece of hardboard, to hone my putting everyday. We haven't been on the greens for two months til last weekend, when my putting stroke was all over the place.

If you want a Scotty, do it, but I am far from convinced that right now it is the right idea. Golf wise, you are loading your bag with stuff that is hard to hit. All this can come later, but right now, I think it will hold you back.

There are easier putters out there to putt with. Most of the Studio line is based on Karsten Solheim (Ping) designs from 30 years ago.

I still hnk you should stick with what you have, o you set a trend of always looking for something new. This isn't the way to improvement.

What happens when you fall out of love with your Scotty?

Putters, Ive said before, Ive been through about 20 before finding the one I use now, but I keep trying others just in case. I am a firm believer after my experiences with putters, that you will know immediately when you have found the one that suits you best. I suspect there are many a putting god who went through a good few like I did, as there will be many a putting god who hasn't yet found their best putter ever.

To me, its worth spending to find it! putting so often can make or break a golfer let alone a round.
