Hi All

I'm in the market for a new putter and love the look of the Scotty Futura X5. I currently have the Scotty Newport Notchback and also a Ping Ketsch.

I feel the Ketsch gives me a bit more consistency and is better from 6 feet in but I really don't like the look of it or the firm feel to be honest....it was a competion prize so I didn't spend any cash on it.

The feel of the notchback is brilliant but I do struggle with it especially from 6 feet in so I thought perhaps a scotty that was more of a mallet would give me the best of both worlds.

HOWEVER - I had a very quick shot on a sam putting lab and it would appear i do have an arc to my stroke - not strong but a slight arc.....so I'm wondering if the face balanced X5 would be a disaster for my stroke type.

I will obviously try any model I'm going to plump for first but wondered what everyone's feedback on it was?

I appreciate I would probably be better spending the money on a putting lesson....but that is nowhere near as much fun as buying a new putter!!!

It probably wouldn't be a disaster as many people with a slight arc putt just fine with a face balanced model. But the manufacturers would have you believe that it is not optimal.

Have a look at the Scotty Golo range. There are mallet models that have a bit of toe hang. I use a Golo5 and have a slight arc stroke. Its a nice putter.

The most important thing is face square through impact on a straight line. Even putters with an arc should achieve that.

My understanding is that the putter corrects you to a proper impact position and you should be aiming to feel like you are straight back and through no matter what putter type you have.

Try putting to feel straight back and through and see how it works, don't try and putt for an arc stroke.

have you tried a blade putter if you have an arc to the stroke?

I have yeh, the notchback is more or less a blade putter. I don't think I putt as well with it as I do with the Ping mallet I have, but as I say, the actual feel of that and looks really put me off using it all the time!!!

when i tried one of those, felt more like a mallet, i found i putt far better with a blade putter myself

I have a slight arc and have the Futura X5.
If I use a putter with any toe hang I struggle to keep it steady when I start my stroke.

Whatever works is good, forget what "should" be right.

cheers mate...i think you've hit the nail on the head. According to conventional wisdom and all pros I've spoken to i should be using a conventional blade but I certainly seem to putt better from 6 feet in with the Ping mallet I have. If I could get a similar model that i liked the look and feel of better than the Ping one I would be happy...as you say, whatever gets the ball in the hole I guess!

would you recommend the X5?

I'd recommend it, yes. Having said that, I just wanted a Scotty because that's what I'm like.

I used an odyssey #7 for a few years which suited me just as well, if you're looking for something a bit easier on the pocket.

Exactly this.

Been through 5 putters in 2015, all toe balanced, until i bought an X5R and my stroke is now more consistent.

We have a Futura X5 in the shop where I work and it looks and feels great. I like that kind of look in a putter and I'm considering using one myself.

yeh, I agree. Serious money but if i sell my Scotty notchback and ping which are in good order that may help fund a new purchase!!! Obviously if you were able get me a great deal from your shop that would help...!! :-)

I'm the same, very slight arc but the head has a tendency to wonder on the way back. Just can't control a blade. Don't rule out some of the more "fugly" scottys. I adore my futura X. It not a looker but god does it work!
