Scotland Womens Golf Team

Not unusual from what ive heard.

Charley Hull was left out of the Curtis cup a couple of years ago because she didn't go to the training camp at Nairn, instead choosing to play in a Womens Major in the US and coming in the top 10.

They changed there minds after a stink was kicked up;)

As Leicester City proved down south this year, you don't always need the best players to have the best team.
I can see why it would cause a bit of a stushie though.
Great word

Its a tough one but looking at the rankings you could pick anyone in the top 8 and have a decent team. Equally, she's only played 1 or 2 less tournaments than some of the others. I wonder if its not just tournament play, and maybe she's missed a few training camps?

Working full time that may be the case.
It does not make it right though.
Scottish Golf criteria seems to be that only youngsters on grants or those with enough money to play full time will be selected.

You're right, DFT, lots of ill feeling about this. The first time ever, I believe, that the Scottish champion hasn't been selected. People are also linking it to several other post-amalgamation issues so things are not happy in Scottish golf at the moment.

I can understand it if she was a 'one off lucky week' champion, that sometimes happens, but she is second in the OOM. By quite a big number from 4th ranked.
Difficult to exclude her on that alone far less being Champion as well.

I'll be honest, when I saw how many times she's played compared to the others I can't see why she hasn't been picked. Its a results driven sport, as are all of them, and her results speak for themselves. You could even flip it on its head and suggest that if she'd played as much as the OOM leader she'd be top. Bad decision, whatever waffle/spin Scottish Golf want to put on it.

There are also questions being asked of the mens selection this year, trouble is the people selecting the teams are not golfers

Hadn't realised it was a team of 7!! I can see its fairly close in terms of some top 10 finishes across the top 4 but after that... it makes even less sense to me. The selectors comments basically suggest they want professional amateurs. Also, if the selectors felt that the European Team Championship entry was a prerequisite for selection they should have announced it up front.

Very poorly handled, no transparency and little communication between the selection committee and potential players. Making statements afterwards, in defence of a specific selection, surely strikes a chord with the selectors.

Exactly. It begs the question whether Scottish golf consider elite amateur golf to be a valid thing in its own right or just a stepping stone to the pro game.

Scottish Champion not selected for the Scottish team.
Ailsa is at present second in the Scottish women's' order of merit.
Caused a bit of a stushie

It appears that if you work full time and restrict your appearances you get treated differently.

Just shows that the days of the true amateur, ie someone who earns a living outside of golf and plays golf as a hobby, are pretty long-gone at the top levels.

Most of the top so-called amateurs are really shamateurs, getting well funded to play golf all over the place in the same way travelling tournament Pros do.

Just reading about this, seems pretty rife in amateur golf across the board with an old fashioned selection panel rather than a meritocratic approach.

Are all the players picked funded by the SGU/full time golfers?

Seems there's a new category of "professional amateur" these days........
