I am going to St Andrews for a week later in the month to play three of the courses as well as Carnoustie.

We have a day off on a Thursday and have decided we are not fit enough to play five days in a row. Any recommendations for a day out preferably within a two hour drive from St Andrews. Would be nice to see something scenic, nice pub lunch that sort of thing.

Any recommendations ?

How about a bit of culture in Edinburgh? You can get the train from Leuchars which is close so no great expense then have a few drinks and no driving. It's only an hour or so away with loads to see and do

This. Get the train job done. Edinburgh is a cracking city.

Castle, Royal Mile and Holyrood Palace for a City visit.

The Hermatige at Dunkeld and the Soldiers Leap at Killicrankie [Pitlochry] for a taste of the scenery.
Good pub right by the river at Dunkeld.

Stirling and Stirling Castle, you can also visit in Bannockburn on that trip!!

I love the town of Pitlochry, you've got the salmon ladder, bells distillery tour and you can do Scone palace either before or after if your into that kind of thing.

sounds like you want something a bit quieter on your 'day off', Elie is about 12 kilometres away, lovely beach and the 19th hole is great for pub lunch, or even the Ship inn which is by the water..........if this is too quiet then St Andrews itself is absolutely fine for walking around, do the castle tour and some really excellent eateries......the driving range is also excellent if you need to keep your swing going

I was going to say Ireland  ;)

I used to love going up around Perth and the surrounding area.

What about this place ?

I believe it's a museum of Scottish culture, the 'history of tartan' display should be right up your street:thup:

They also have a weaving display:thup::thup:

Perhaps a nice afternoon tea and a early night may be on the cards, you don't want to over do it

Done that, and we are hitting the hot spots of Edinburgh the night before. We want scenic Scotland.

We have been to St Andrews before, and have done the coast road Crail, Elie etc. Done the sights in Edinburgh so looking for something further afield.

Do you want me to get you a real Harris tweed flat cap, to replace your Matalan one ?

Perth/Pitlochry then.
East coast is a bit dull compared to the west coast.

As mentioned earlier there is a good pub/restaraunt just over the bridge at Dunkeld.
Pitlochry also has a good pub at the waterwheel in the town centre.
Sitting with a pint there one night and Dougie MacLean [Caledonia] sat down and started chatting away to us. They have a good festival on around the time of your visit.
Check out the dates for 'The Enchanted Forrest' which is well worth a visit. [provided you don't mind an hours drive home at 11pm]
I shall try to find the links.

Distillery sounds good to me, but one of our group has not had a drink for 25 years, due to liking the scotch too much, so don't think we should be tempting him ! Will add to the consideration list though.

You could head North to Inverness. Spectacular scenery on the drive, a visit to Culloden Moor and Inverness itself is a nice place.
